    Gotta replace this clutch...

My original clutch (175k) is headed south and I need to get a new one. With that in mind, I have a few questions...

    1. Will a stage 1 clutch from Exedy (or anybody else) be more durable than an OEM spec clutch? I've laid off this clutch for too long and would like to get back to stepping on it again, will an aftermarket stage 1 jobby last longer and handle the abuse?

    2. I can turn a decent wrench and I have access to a Lexus mechanic and Lexus dealership service bay. The opinions on swapping the clutch seem to vary, so with the above in mind, is this a job this guy and I can handle in a decent amount of time or am I better off having a Honda place (dealer or indy) do it?

    3. If I do decide to do the clutch myself what are the potential 'gotchas' involved? Worn parts, broken parts... I've read that sometimes you have to resurface the flywheel or something...

    Thanks

    1) Stage ones are equivelent to OE clutches. If you want something a little stronger then OE but won't break the bank buy yourself an Exedy "Racing" clutch. They're around $250 give or take and basically Exedy's stage two lutch kit.

2)If who ever is giving you access to the service bay is also a mechanic and you have decent knowledge then I see no reason why you can't complete the job in 5-6 hours.

    3) You will always need to resurface the flywheel, If there is no access to a flywheel machine then buy a replacement flywheel (Exedy offers cheap OE quality flywheels) so you can get the job done in one sitting. You'll need to change the friction disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing, and resurface the flywheel. Be careful so you don't break anything else.

I don't need super duty, just something that will withstand some beating. Since I got the car with 80k on it, beat the crap out of the clutch... at 175k is not too bad. Just want something that will last more than the Autozone/Checkers/NAPA jobbies.

Friction disc, pressure plate and throwout bearing... are these things that will come with the clutch or are there clutch 'kits' that have the clutch and the other components you mentioned?

you're problem is you're granny shifting, not double-clutching like you should

You have to check the individual kit because I'm not sure but they'll atleast come with the friction disc and pressure plate. Look into the Exedy Racing.

sorry about my previous whore post. in my excitement i forgot to give pertinent info.

anyways, from personal experience i know ACT clutch kits (makes for 90-02 accords) come with your choice of either "performance" organic race discs or a 4 pad race disc (*which for daily driving i would NOT recommend. harsh engagement and all) and heavy duty pressure plate, release bearings, pilot bearings and , if needed, alignment tools.

you can pick up either kit online for around $300 depending on where you go.

sorry, i have no personal experience with Exedy, so i have no comment on those.

Don't want to argue with you but for Clutch Masters at least Stage 1 isn't an OEM replacement; its stage 0. The FX100 is their stage 1.

I don't doubt it but I don't deal with clutch master, I've had a few bad experiances with their products.

                      '93accordse,
H/F series don't use pilot bearings, That's D/B series tech.
