hey guys, i need some help. Lately my window has been coming off track, about 4 times in 3 days. So i was wondering what might be causing the problem. I even had my mechanic put it back on track and he said a nut had been stripped, but he put another nut on behind that one so the screw would catch onto something. But today it came off again and i put it back on track. Then, tonight the damn thing came off again. Please help if you know what could be going on. Also when i brake, sometimes, the battery lgith will come on for a second and go off. It doesnt do it all the time. What might be going on? Thanks a lot guys, Matt.

Window coming off track

That battery light thing I think is your car dropping below nominal voltage. I've not looked into that though. However, that window dropping off track:
Your glass sits in two trays. These trays can be made out of plastic or metal. The trays use a combination of pressure and adhesive. Your glass pane will commonly pop out of these trays during the winter, when ice has built up around the edge of the glass, and a person goes to roll down their window. This happens all the time at a military base, because people try to roll their window down to show the gate guard their ID card. A failure of either the proper holding pressure or failure of the adhesive can cause the glass to come out of these trays.
These trays are attatced to a sliding arm by two bolt points. A bolt goes through the sliding arm, and into the tray holding the glass. If these bolts are loose, your window with trays attatched can dislocate and fall off the sliding arm. This is fixed by re-locating the trays on the sliding arm, and properly tightening them with a 10mm deepwell or extended 10mil. However, this sliding arm and its assembly is bolted into the inside of the door by I believe is 4 bolts. When any one of these four bolts are loose, or missing, your window sliding tracks (the felt lined edges, in which the glass sits) can move around and allow your window to "pop" out of this edge and dislocate. This will leave your window attatched to its sliding arm, but will be "off track." This can be fixed by tightening the window track bolts, or replacing the missing ones.
However, sometimes window "regulator" assemblies can become bent or warped with age. This is the alluminum driving system that makes up the automatic window. It includes the motor, gears, and rack. It also includes the sliding arm that the window tracks bolt into. This assembly is commonly worn to the point where it will cause the window to dislocate or angle the window in such a way that it is difficult to roll up and down.

my window comes off track too...i tried what you said but i have a diff problem...3 of the bolts holding the power window mech to the door frame seem to be stripped bc i cant seem to get them tight...im not sure if this is the reason the window gets off track though...
when i roll the window up and down i hear a loud screeching noise, could the reason my window comes off track be bc the tracks need lubricating?

The screeching is a result of a few things. When a car is new, a window is smooth, its movement is true, and the tracks are soft. However, over time of up and down, there can become play in the trueness of the window, and the texture of the glass sliding up and down. The two ways to attack this are one, to use silicone lubricant in the window track. This solution doesn't usually fix a screechy window, but it will definitely quicken a slow window. The second approach is to address the tracks. Remove the door panel and examine the mechanics. See if you can straighten the tracks back up with the window, and check if the bolts have become loose. Finally, the most common fix, is to replace the regulator assembly which becomes warped and develops play over time. This is the entire power aseembly that moves the window up and down.

thanks...
the reason my window is coming off track is because the "sloped" side of the window isnt pushing up all the way causing the "straight" side to come off the track...I have noticed a tiny black build up on the glass on the "sloped" side
^tell me if that didnt make any sense and i will try and reword
ive taken off the door panel and attempted to tighten bolts which seem to have become stripped bc they will not fully tighten...
is it difficult to replace the regulator assembly?Last edited by Aaron; 07-20-2004, 11:16 PM.
