ok someone please explain the compression of pistons to me. wat is good? wat isnt? where the hell do these numbers come from? wat should be ran with turbo? na? etc. etc.
Teach me damn it!
Higher compression ratios mean you compress more air and fuel before igniting it. The more you compress, the bigger the explosion which equal more power. However the higher the ratio the more prone it is to "knocking" or predetonating. Thats why you use a higher octane gas. If you were to go all motor you would want higher compression, not to high though. Turbo would want lower compression. Your car would be a little slower before the turbo kicks in, but it is safer. It is possible to use higher compression pistons for turbo but tuning is very very critical. The plus to this is you would have more power off the line while the turbo isnt at its max yet. Any body else want to add anything.
Oh yeah you would use a compression gauge to check the compression.
the numbers come from how much volume the air/fuel takes up before compressing it and after. If the compression ratio is 9:1 then after the compression stroke, the air/fuel mixture is 1/9 the size that it was before the compression stroke, when the piston was at its lowest point.
