    timing help

The cam timing got fubared when i took the belts off my H22. Anybody able to point me in the right direction?

edit: i want to know how to set the motor to TDC. I know there is timing marks on the various cogs, but im unsure on what to line them up to

theres should be an UP mark on the cam gear as well as 2 notches

those notches should be parralell to the cylinder head and, of course, the UP mark should be pointed up

as far as finding the TDC for the motor, turn the crankshaft counter-clockwise until the front balance shaft lines up(you should be able to see it where the timing belt goes into the hole, the brass looking gear)

you also need to locate the tranny mark, u pull out the rubber plug, and there should be a white mark designating TDC

i think his main thing is the timing belt is off and its not marked so he can put it back on. how can he put it back on with out messing up the timing. im wondering the same thing. how can you replace a timing belt if its not marked.

The timing belt gets lines up with the timing pulley on the crank, and the two cam gears. The timing pulley will only go in one way since it has a key as well as the cam gears. In order to find out if the car is at TDC, you could insert a long rod into spark plug #1 hole and turn the crank pulley until the rod is at its highest point. That's top dead center. The cam gears should be turned until both arrows are pointing up and the horizontal marks are lined up with the engine head. You can then put the belt on once those are lined up.

          ...adjust accordingly

correct and you dont need to put the timing belt in the same exact position just that soome t-belts run one way.

just make sure your pulleys and stuff are dead on the marks.

the balance shaft spins like 4 times, while the crank turns once. Or something like that, but it's definitely not the same.

Take off your crank pulley. Make sure the key matches the mark on the block.

Your cams, well, that should be self explanatory.

But really? I'd expect more from you. There's a lot of DIY's on how to do your timing belt.

^This is the absolute easiest way, my tensioner came loose earlier this year and my cam timing was retarded by 2 teeth, so I found TDC w/ a long screwdriver and realigned the cam. I recommend this method unless you already have everything unbolted/torn apart.

how about the balancers and the water pump? do they need to be positioned before the belt goes on?

edit: i figured out the balancers, but does the water pump need to be aligned? i couldnt find anything on it in the PFD service manual.

                    Water pump does not matter.

water pump gear orientation does not matter
cam gears all at 12 oclock (horizontal tick marks parallel with cyl head surface)
front balance shaft pulley 12 oclock
rear balance shaft gear 5 oclock
                      crank pulley 12 oclock
