    Flywheel Cutting ??

Can A fly wheel be cut more than once? i hear so many differnt answers. Also how much about will it cost. My friend greg cut his cut for $15......other friend got his $60

cut as in lightened? it's all a matter of how much is left and if there are any defects in it at all. if it's in good shape, then someone could properly shave some weight from it but the thinner it is, the easier it warps when hot. a warped flywheel is a bitch and can only be replaced.

you can resurface them a bunch of times, but the thinner it is, the easier it warps, just like a rotor. if it's glazing over, then you're not breaking in your clutch properly, it's getting too hot too soon and you need to replace the clutch too.

proper break in will cure that.

LOL you don't cut a flywheel for weight reduction!

you can take 7lbs off of the stock flywheel i believe. it's a cheap "lightened flywheel" that increases throttle response and allows another 3-5hp to get to the wheels.

they've been doing this for a few decades now, not a new thing

haha cuttin flywheels those are fun. Yes you can cut them as fizz mentioned but as far to cut I am not sure. Maybe fizz is right but I always recommend my friend to get a new one or aftermarket flywheel if they have the cash rather than cutting it. But tahts just me.

yeah, it's not legal on any track normally and is illegal in a lot of cities because of the chance of it shattering and throwing shards of metal everywhere. it's like hacking springs. doable but not recommended.

someone with knowledge and a way to take it off evenly is needed. can't just go to grinding.

if you want to lighten them, you can remove material off the other side where the disc doesnt touch. i think we do it with a rotary table and the mill, we also step it so it doesnt lose as much strength and become a hand grenade.

but we charge 55 to resurface just to let you know. a honda accord flywheel is "stepped" and some shops may try and charge you more. back in the day, i was quoted 120 because it was stepped.

if it has some oil on it clean it up with carb cleaner.
if you need to resurface it they NEED to restore the factory step height around the edge of it.

if your clutch is oil-soaked it won't matter anyway

me and my older hot rod friends always just used a angle grinder with 36 grit, and there have never been any issuses with resurfacing like that...

this does not mean it is the correct way.. just the free way.
