I had a tach problem in another car I used to own it was from bad wiring-my fault. I had an electric gauge hooked up and the wiring was not done well (twisted together and duct taped) I cut all that crap I put in out, and it fixed it.

on the stairs, she grabs my arm, says whats up,
where you been, is something wrong?
i try to just smile, and say everything’s fine.

When my tach died a couple of years ago, it started to go out intermittedly and then died all together. My cruise died also because it lacked the tach. I finally traced the problem to the pickup off the distributor. Mine died a couple months ago and when I replaced the distributor, Walla! tach and cruise were back and good as ever. If you want to check if this is the source, you can take the distributor cap off and check for oil or red dust on the inside. This is a sign that your distributor is failing. Keep in mind though that my tach died way before the distributor ended up dying and if you don't want to be stranded somewhere I would replace it before it goes bad as they tend to do in our generation Accords. Lucky for me that I was next to the auto parts store with the cheapest distr. in town, buying oil when the car died.
