    Air Conditioning Performance

Over the past 4 months I've been watching the thermometer I have in the center air vents go from 50 to 60 to 70 and finally 75 when the air conditioning is on-

Granted it gets 100+ in Texas, and the a/c does do some amout of cooling, it just didn't seem to be working quite efficiently as I would like.

    So here's what I did:

Put R134a in the R12- and it works. Temp on the thermometer is now a constant 38 degrees coming out of the center vent.

Purged the old R12, added 2oz of oil, added 2 cans of R134a, and thats it. Cold, cold a/c.

One problem: the a/c compressor whines like a Ford power steering pump. Any ideas to cure this little problem? Everything seems to word fine, except for the moaning/whining noise.

You put 134a in while the system still had r12? I'm not positive, but I don't think that was very good for it. I could be wrong, but I do know I hate ford power steering pumps, that must be aweful!

on the road its not noticible, but if going down a fenced alleyway it is. At idle theres no noise, but when the engine is above it, it moans.

In the past we have done the same thing to a 1990 Toyota Tercel, as well as an 1988 Olds Cutlass Calais, with no problems.

        More TX AC probs

My AC sucks too but its not blowing 38 I promise, more like 75. I think I am having a problem with the valve (electronic I think) that controls the flow of heated water to my heater core, the valve located on the firewall. When air is off and vent air is blowing it is warmer than it should be. I thought was blowing normal non AC temp till this cold front came through then I noticed it was warmer than it should be. Sorry not trying to hijack.

Not a problem. With a high temp of 72 the in Texas in late July, its all good.

So u can put R134a with the r12 and don't have to do the retrofitting thing and the a/c work? Everyone told me that the old r12 NEED to flush out before u can put in r134a.If it works then i am going to do it.

Great achievements result from great effort

Acutally it was taken Feb 14th 2004 in McKinney, TX in an elementary school parking lot. We got about 4" (which as you know is a lot for N Central TX). The bug deflector is in storage, the grille is now black, the 2" blue driving lights are now 3" clear driving lights, and an extra set of OEM headlights are currently undergoing a DIY blackout treatment. A second set of OEM corners from eBay should be arriving soon for their own DIY blackout (providing they don't look like crap when done).

You got it. We 'removed' the old R12, and used an old refrigerator pump to get a half pound of vacuum, drew in 2oz oil, added 1 can of some 'high mileage' R134, and a can of the WalMart R134. We borrowed some Matco gauges and all it takes is an adaptor to convert the 134 tip to the 12 tip. The drawback to doing this is the compressor is noisy, but it produces cold, cold AC without having to do the conversion. Doing this procedure is at your own risk.

Update: the noise is still there, but the a/c is still ice cold. to cold a/c.

that is cool that is that cold but i have the same problem, but within the past month i replaced the a/c compressor and retroffited it to r134 and it blows 64 degrees and it won't go any lower. sometimes when it is on you can feel it go from cold to warm and then back to cold. what could the problem be? i put 2.5 cans of r134 in and it still seems to be not as cold as a/c should be any ideas?

did you add new oil? when you convert to 134a from 12, the oil has to be completely taken out of the system along with the freon and new oil and freon added. the 2 freons pressurise differently and the oil/freon isnt supposed to be mixed at all, thats why the conversion kits come with new oil along with the new freon.

i believe going from r12 to r134a means putting in less oil and more freon than what is called for with r12 in the system

umm.. can someone help me w/ my a/c?

i don't know what is wrong, the a/c isn't cold. the wierd thing is b4, whenever i turned on a/c it would kill the car, but since we changed the radiator as it cracked the a/c would open fine NOW... we turn on a/c and the car is normal, it doesn't die out. (wierd) but it just isn't cold at all, it blows but not cold.

the thing is, i dunno what could be really wrong, i am a poor college student, and going to a place to have them charge it and then have no a/c will be a waste. plus i like to learn and explore things if it is suitable for me.

i dunno if the compressor is hashed or there's a leak or the metals got into somewhere and screwed things up.. if the a/c is fixed i can finally use this as my daily commute.

                            thanks..

Sounds like your compressor is not kicking on like mine. If any one knows what might cause this besides a bad compressor please let us know.
