    H22a4 Timing

Ok, I heard its impossible to set timing on a 5th gen prelude. Because of the fact that its OBD2, that sounds like it could be right. I checked it today, and it was around 15 degrees at idle when warm. Does anyone a)know if i can set it, or b)know what the degrees should be set at.

This whole problem came around because I'm getting a vibration at idle. I hate when my door panels rattle, and my headliner, and other various trim rattles even a little bit and I want to fix it.

I just put new plugs, cap and rotor on it a few weeks ago. I put NGK Plugs this time, but last time I had Bosch Platinum +2's and they were BLACK in like 5 months. I probably put 13-14k miles on those plugs but that still seems a little fast for them to be fouling out, right?

I need some more ideas for what this idle issue could be, whether it be mounts, a fuel filter (which I have already, but its a bitch to change), or anything else you guys can think of.

    Thanks as usual guys.

I know how to adjust timing, but I heard it would just reset via the ECU since it is OBD2.

        1. Check mounts
        2. What ECU are you running
        3. I think its the same as the accord 15 degrees before.
        4. Maual or auto

Stock ECU for a 97 Lude... Not sure.

          Autotragic unfortunately. (Tiptronic, of course).

How can I check the mounts? Especially if 2 are hydraulic.

The ecu changes timing constantly. Thats why you have the jump the service connector to keep the check engine light on. If you dont jump the connector and you try to shoot the timing light you will never find the mark.

Just jump the connector and shoot the light like a regular OBD1 setup.

Timing has nothing to with your vibrations.

                raise the idle slightly.

Two are hydraulic on the auto? Didnt know that didnt pay attention on my friends. Anyway they should be somewhat wet looks like a popped water balloon. It could be as easy as an idle issue. As I recally the timing deal for the auto is on the crank pulley. But you can try adjusting the idle or searching around the engine bay for worn mounts.

Nail, the front left is hydraulic, and so is the rear (I believe). I changed the idle screw a couple months ago but it didn't really do much, I'll play with it again. I thought it could be along the lines of an o2 sensor. The thing about that though, is at my work (Checker), the sensors are 297.99 EACH. (And bosch SUCKS anyways). My friend told me he saw black smoke when I hit vtec in second a couple weeks ago, not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Um... I use seafoam every now and then to try to improve idle quality. It hasn't really done much. I have no check engine lights on. Could it still be a spark plug wire or something?

I'm gonna check into the mounts as soon as I can, but I haven't really seen too much movement out of the engine at first inspection.

As far as the service connector goes, its obd2, so it doesn't have one other then the normal obd2 slot right? So what do I use to set timing? I have an Actron OBD1/2 scanner but the check engine light doesn't come on when its plugged in.

But yeah, I'll look at the mounts when i get a chance.
