    carpet dyeing

is there a conventional way to dye automotive carpet? mainly my floormats are now a dull faded red instead of the deep dark red like the rest of my interior. i just wanted to get some color back into the mats. i know you can dye house carpet but there is no DIY for that. does anyone know a simple way to do so.

i was thinking to just soak the mats in a pool of red wine LOL . there must be a better more permanent way.

btw, this is in reference to http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthre...=carpet+dyeing. this was the only thread i found and it doesn't help much. i would have posted there but i wanted my own thread so there .

Use a bath tub and a good pair of rubber gloves, get a good dye the closest possible to the original color, its always better to have the color be a little too light then too dark.

While this works, I do just want to pass on some information about dying floormats.

Awhile back, my friend bid on some black mats for his Civic. He put them in and all was well, but after about 2 weeks the mats started turning tan. It ended up that the mats were most likely tan to begin with and were dyed black.

While this won't be a huge issue since the mats are red to begin with, it is just something to keep in mind.

I'd just keep an eye on on Ebay, I recenlty saw a set of red mats actually. But don't worry, these mats are notorious for fading, it seems. My blue mats are turning a delightful shade of teal.

for all the trouble and time it's worth (as tyscb7 wrote, you either fill up a bath tub, or a nice large bucket), it seems almost better just to buy new mats, or just keep the ones you have.

the only dye i've heard of is rit, but i'm sure there's others. some people say the longer you soak/cure the mats/carpets the better it takes up... with the caveat being the harder it is to clean up the bath tub or bucket that is used.

i've seen diy mats in the past, and they were unimpressive- not horrible looking, but they didn't look brand new either.

maybe just a nice shampoo to the mats would do the trick?!

The dye will be more expensive overall than just buying new matts. And you can buy matts with cool designs like dragons, and fairies if your into that. Also, the dye will either fade, or smudge off after constant use, like in a floormat, so just buy some new rubber ones.

I actually used some art&craft fabric paint that I bought on Ebay. My grey carpet is now black and my door panels are more like charcoal.
