I watched that video not long ago.

It's crazy how simple and cheap they are to make yet cost so much.

The quality of cheap Chinese turbos compared to more expensive brands show the difference in manufacturing, though. Cheap to make, sure... but the precision machines, high quality materials, quality control procedures (probably tossing out anything that isn't up to spec), and warranty offerings... those things add up.

It's the materials and workmanship that are expensive. Check out how simple in premise a jet engine is, but how complex and precise they are in execution. Technically, a turbo is a jet engine without the combustion section.

They are especially neat when you get into things like the Pratt and Whitneys on the SR71 Blackbird. Turbo Ramjets FTW!

My college had one of those pieces of equipment in the labs, the Rennishaw CMM machine with the ruby probe.....I believe it cost close to a million dollars when new.

So you can't just expect to bang a ton of these out for nothing. Initial investment for all the tooling needed is quite expensive not to mention an engineer had to design one of those housings on CAD or some modeling software, then the castings had to be made...it all adds up.
