    EXT: Engine shampoo

This is my first DIY and first engine shampoo, so please feel free to add to it.

    1. Open your hood.

    2. Cover your electrical components with plastic bags or aluminum foil. Make sure to cover your alternator, distributor, air intake (if you have an open one), fuse box, alarm (if you have one) and any exposed electrical wires. The idea is to make sure not to get anything electrical wet. If your unsure bag it just to be on the safe side. Wanna protect it? Wrap it up!

    Alternator:

    Fuse box:

Distributor and Battery (just to be safe):

    3. Spray your whole engine bay with an engine degreaser. If your engine bay is really dirty, spray it with Gunk heavy duty engine degreaser. If its only mildly dirty use Simple Green Automotive degreaser. Remember to spray degreaser in all the areas of the engine bay.

    4. Let the degreaser loosen all the dirt, oil and grime for 15 minutes.

    Engine shampoo Cont.

    5. With a brush or toothbrush scrub the hard to reach areas.

    6. Rinse the engine bay with a hose. Careful not to go crazy near your bagged electrical components.

    7. Take the bags of of your electrical components and run your engine for 15 minutes to allow all of the water to dry off. Wipe of any excess water with a microfiber towel.

    8. Apply your choice of protectant or engine dressing to the plastic and rubber pieces of your engine.

    9. Sit back and admire.

      Nice write up!!!

Only thing i would suggest is to NOT use a power washer in step 6.....it tends to force water in places where water shouldnt go.

Weve had success on here with only a garden hose...no need for pressure. If you engine is that bad might wanna get it professionally cleaned.

bags are unnecessary, i work at GM, and nothing is ever covered up, if your driving in rain, your whole undercarriage and most of your engine bay gets soaked anyways, however, i suppose it makes people feel better....

ps. Nice write up! now do your underside of your hood too!!

yeah I did pretty much the same thing back when I had the f22, cept I used a pressure washer.

I guess whether someone wants to use the pressure washer is up to them. I've used it for the four engine bays I've cleaned and I've never had a problem. But there are horror stories so

                Either way, good write up!

ummm, yes the bags are necessary to cover up all the electrical stuff, distributor, fuse box etc.

Hey, good write up and if you spray some "cover all" all over and let it set for a few min. then wash off will do wonder to the engine.

ok maybe you just had bad luck because every vehicle that comes through our shop we clean the engine bay along with the rest of the car and never have a problem.. with a preasure washer and no baggies.
