    I need some Homework Help

The floor plan of a certain building has a scale of ĵ in = 1 ft. and shows a room having an area of 40 in². What is the actual room area in sq. ft. ?

    Answer is 640 ft²

Can anyone explain this? I know this is easy shit, but Im having a brain fart.

we are kinda doing this you should pay attention to the scale. make a table of all your info and make an equation from it. I will post some more help in a bit if someone doesnt help more but I have to look through my notes

Your scale was 1/4 to 1, or 1:4
When it became square, you square both sides. 1 stays at 1, and 1/4 becomes 1/16, so your ratio is essentially 1:16.

So, you multiply the inch amount by 16 to get your answer.

you beat me to it I didn't know how to explain it but I knew you had to square the four of the ratio because I knew that that answer 16 multiplied by 40 would equal the 640 I just wasn't making the connection as to why it worked LOL

imagine your scale of 1/4in == 1ft to be telling you how big of a unit to think in, for example, how large each tile on the floor will be. the reason the responses above tell you to square everything, is because its working in terms of area (as indicated by the units, the in² and ft²) not in terms of length, which is what the scale is in.

          so for a 1ft square piece of floor tile, its 1ft x 1ft = 1ft² of area.

what is the area of the "matching" 1/4 scaled version of a floor tile? 1/4in x 1/4in = .0625in² (or 1/16th)

so if the area is 40in² in the model, how many .0625in² floor tiles is that? 40 / .0625 = 640 tiles.

and if every tile in real life is 1ft² of area, that would make 640 * 1 = 640 ft²

              Thanks guys. I appreciate it.

I knew it was easy, and it had something to do with the square, I just couldnt apply it. Thanks once again.

Please, no. Finding the flux with vector calculus is bad enough.

doesn't that deal w/ finding out what the wronskian is first? idk i took Differential Equations 2 times and couldn't pass it. I eventually HAVE to pass it for my Engineering credits though......bleh.

No, Wronskian is a method for solving DEs (as you know). Does't have anything to do with Laplace.

Oh the joys of being in grad school and revisiting things I've long forgotten!

I also took DE twice in undergrad, D- and C

holy crap, those names brought back some memories... i failed. it was actually interesting, the class just moved too quickly to grasp it well enough. and now that calc 1-3 isnt fresh in my mind i wonder if I would even be able to retake and pass it at all? it is not required for my current major tho so im fine
