    Some computer help needed

Ok so I just acquired a HP laptop without a hard drive and the screen is black, "which I believe is the inverter" I dont have the back up disc's and was wondering what I need to do and or get, to get this thing up and running? Besides the Hard drive of course.

The black screen issue. The screen would work every so often but was very rare, and if you tilt the screen just right you could see all the icons and the mouse. If it were the inverter would this cause this issue? and if so where is it located around the screen?

How do you see something without a HD?

    Im confused.

To get it up and running you need a Hd of course and maybe a new screen? Also an OS to install on that HD. You could buy Windows (depending on the specs) or just dl the latest Ubuntu and install it.

Do you have the charger etc?

Might as well sell it for parts and put that money towards a netbook.

My old compaq laptop running xp started doing this too, upon startup. It'll display the xp screen, then will just sit there and you can see the pixels going away until the screen turns black. You can hear the HD spin up, then spin down, repeating the process over and over. My guess with both of ours, is a software issue, not a hardware problem.

I would take Ralphie's advice. Unless you feel like going with a new HD, not having the backup discs will be of no help.

Oh and where in VT are you? glad to see me and HondAccordMan aren't the only active members at this point

::EDIT:: ok nvm i found my old 'vt' post, and read your post..oops well we should roll down to the CT meet if you're planning on going.

It was my friends, He ended up grading to a bigger HD, then when the screen screwed up swapped it to his PS3. Yes I have the charger and a HD just wasn't sure what I needed to install to get it working. Also it will work if hooked up to the tv.

I'm from Townshend VT but currently live in Wethersfield CT.

And as for it being hardware It will work if hooked up a tv, and I believe if it were hardware it wouldnt work either way.

sounds like the either the screen or a cable connecting the screen is shot.

9/10 yes that is the invernet. I've replaced this many times, what model laptops do you have ( dosent really matter ). For replacment on most HP's you just remove 6 screws around the screen bezel. They are normally hidden under the little rubber bumpers at the top. Remove the 6 screws carefully pry off the bezel and the invernet is at the bottom of the screen. Its normally held in place by 1 screw and 2 connecters. Take out the invernet and reverse proceedure for reinstall. The only other thing that could be bad is the actual CCFL bulb inside the screen but that isnt very likely. I can get you the part number and a location to buy it if i know your laptop. The model number is around the screen some where or above the keyboard and should start with " ZV ZD DV or if your old school ZE "

Its a dv6000 something something. Ok I thought that was the invertor, Before I got the laptop I tried to see if any wires where disconnected. I've read that from opening and closing the screen wires can come disconnected but thats not the case, atleast not that I can see.

I highly doubt the cable would get pulled out from opening and closing the screen. It dosent have any tension on it its fairly loose so its most likely burnt out. The part is cheap and the repair is easy. If you can work on cars you can do this. Just remember to be careful but there isnt really much you can static discharge and break here

I would guess thats its the LCD cable from the MOBO to the screen. Those get worn and break with use.

Cool thanks. I called the locale pc store and they want 70 buck-a-roos for the invertor. and shit for under 20 bucks it doesnt hurt to try it.

If it were the cable what color is it usually? I didn't see any wires that looked damaged, but i'll give it another look.

This is what the flex cable looks like

                          http://cgi.ebay.com/HP-dv6000-LCD-fl...item35a65167b0

I HIGHLY doubt that is the problem. I have NEVER seen even the slightest bit of damage on thoes cables. If it was that cable your whole screen wouldnt work anyways because the inverter cable and screen data cable are 1 in the same then split into 2. By the way i used to own a dv6500 and have worked on many dv6000's and dv9000's

You can get an inverter off ebay for under 10 bucks. I picked one up for a dv9535nr for 10 shipped. It worked fine.

The best way to tell if its your inverter is to hook it up to an external monitor. If that works, it's most likely your inverter. If it doesn't, then most likely it's your motherboard, as I believe the dv6000 comes with an integrated video controller (built into the motherboard).
