So I work a thankless job in a resturant hosting, bussing and generally doing whatever everyone else doesn't want to do. A recent hire shows up to work in a tinted up, lowered BMW M3 and starts to wash dishes. Wouldn't even talk to me he was so stuck up and acted like his car was the shit. Even talked down on my car when he figured out that I drove the beat up, old Honda with a fartcan. Well last friday he showed up a little late then couldn't keep up with the volume of dishes, so he got fired on the spot. He went down the road to a bar, got trashed and tried to drive home. He made it part of the way before hitting a puddle, hydroplaning, sliding into a ditch and rolling his expensive car. His other job btw is at Abercrombie and Fitch so those bruises probably didn't go over too well. My only question is if you're washing dishes, how do you drive an expensive BMW?

To answer your question,
It is definitely realistic... Say he washes dishes at a restaurant and makes about 8/hr. Suppose he works 3 nights a week 8hr shifts ~ $160 a week after taxes. Plus suppose he works his other job at Abercrombie 3 days a week 8hr shifts at ~$9/hr - ~ $180 a week after taxes. That's a total of 340 cash a week and roughly $1360 a month.
Now, you can find an E46 M3 in great condition for about 17,000. Add tax and interest and it becomes roughly 19,000 but if you finance it over 5 years it is only $330 a month.
His monthly income is potentially 1,360 (see above). So say his car payment is 330 and his insurace is 200 a month assuming he has a couple of speeding tickets. Suppose he lives in his mom's basement which is very realistic.
1,360 - 330 - 200 = 830. So at the end of the month he still has enough cash left for window tint and aftermarket suspension that you mentioned. In fact, if he saved up for a few month, he would have enough to boost that shit lol.
LOL I can't believe I just wrote all this but I hope you see my point. If you manage your money correctly, you could be driving a Viper and washing dishes. It is highly unlikely to see though because of the way an average person spends their money nowadays.
I built my old Civic with 0 income. I had a total of about 5or6 grand in that car. It was a piece of shit on the outside and not pretty to look at but it was fast as shit. I honestly raised the money to build that car by just selling random shit on eBay. When I got a real job, within four months, I was able to buy my Integra GS-R and boost it right away without taking a loan or putting anything on my credit card and, in that same time frame, I bought a Mustang GT with cash... I was also planning on financing a Viper or a Vette. Then I realized how dumb it was and that my money should be spent elsewhere.Last edited by rexload; 04-24-2011, 10:50 AM.

well it was about an 01-06 bmw m3, lowered on coilovers, 20% tint, nice aftermarket rims (18" I think), some sort of exhaust system. Like I said, didn't know the guy too well, but he had a bunch of tattoo's, looked to be maybe 25, New Mexico plates on the car. We were joking around and thinking of reasons he drove such a nice car, and the conclusion was he either was evading drug charges from the border, hitman or stole the carBeing normal is probably the lamest thing you can try to be

MANY of my former coworkers in the restaurant business were dealing drugs... so that's entirely possible!
Mommy and daddy could have bought it as well.
Or if he still lives with mommy and daddy... he could afford to pay for an expensive car if he has no other bills to pay.
If it was an E36, those things are actually pretty easy to find, and quite cheap if they've seen a ton of miles, or a lot of wear and tear.
The dumbass will heal. That beautiful car is toast, though... that's the sad part.
