    Vpn

I've just realised that a VPN is a good idea. I'd like to set one up, but al the articles I'm finding are how to configure Windows to connect to one that's already set up.
I have Windows Server 2003 and 2008 running at my house. I can run it within those, or if it needs a seperate enviroment I could set up another Linux box.

Anyone done this? Any idea of the processing load I can expect? Any good articles or how to's I can follow?

You just need to use remote desktop and you can connect to either of them from anywhere.

If you have your own static IP or domain you can just connect to that, but if not you will need to set up a vpn on the server and leave it running. Then you can connect to the VPN with your client machine and connect to the VPNs ip with remote desktop.

Logmein Hamachi is a pretty good one and its free.

I am using Remote Desktop. I thought VPNs used encryption, so I could use my schools network(which is completely open) and still be fairly secure.

Yes a VPN creates a secure tunnel between a client (your comp) and a server. Any kind of secure and unsecure traffic you pass is shielded by this tunnel.
