    Local Story....opinions

Short story: Highway patrol was chasing a car day after Thanksgiving last year. He ended up running and when the cop lost sight of him the kid hit a tree. Cop drove right by the wreck, side note the car was on fire, drove down the road sat and waited.

Did he do the wrong thing? Probably. Do I think he would have done differently if he knew that it was a fatality he was dealing with. Probably. Either way, the kid should not have run. No good can ever come from that.

But I ask you; are you one of these people on here that would post propaganda supporting your beliefs that cops are corrupt and twisted? Would you make a generality about an entire workforce based on the merits of one member? I hope not. Like GeoffM said: there's been a lot of those lately.

I agree he shouldn't have ran. I don't believe all police are bad many of them are great people and do their job well. Sadly some think their badge is a crown. In this case this officer saw the accident and for what ever reason chose to ignore it. Its also stated he called a lawyer within five minutes after being on the scene. To me he did not do his job and should be punished

Alot of those threads could have gone either way....... This is a situation where idc if ur a cop or what... if I saw a car burning on side of the road I would stop just to make sure no one was in there. I know there isn't much I would be able to do for them but I couldn't sleep at night knowing that someone died when there MIGHT have been something I could do. That troopers job is to protect and serve no matter the situation. Was the guy wrong for running? Of course! But I don't think he deserved to be die in a burning car while a cop watches.... IMO he(the state trooper)should be facing some kind of charges....

driver got what hey deserved but...

no cop is supposed to let someone just die. no matter what. even after they shoot a person they have to try to stop the bleeding n' what not. his job is to arrest people, help, protect, and serve. even if its the asshole that decided to buck from the cops. shit go watch cops, they will chase a man down watch him get hit by trucks and what do they do? they go over to see if he is alive and call ambulance asap. now he is just on cop, even i know not all cops are that fucked up. some just dont care any more. just like how some kids give up in school and do mass murders

Honestly, by neglecting his duty, he allowed the kid to die. The neglect was intentional, even if the death was not. I say this man is guilty of murder.

the kid was dead on impact, so technically he didnt "allow the kid to die". however, he had no knowledge of that when he saw the wreck, therefore id say this is spot on. maybe not guilty of murder , but definitely negligent and undeserving of employment with state law enforcement.

x2 it comes off as that particular cop having more interest in arresting someone rather than protecting and saving a life it boils my blood to see our law enforcement doing shit like this no one should just ignore a car on fire on the side of the road

Was it confirmed that he was dead on impact? I heard from another report that he had burned to death.
But yeah, either way... the cop didn't know it. And if he just thought the car was pulled over, then it certainly couldn't have been serious enough to kill the kid on impact (or rather, if it was serious enough, it couldn't have been mistaken for being pulled over.) He waited nearby until someone else called it in... because someone else (not a cop, not someone trained to look for abnormalities on the road) saw it and called it in...
Also, he noticed the car. He'd have been smarter to say he didn't notice anything at all. Instead, he admitted to noticing the car "pulled over".

I'm merely assuming... but I can imagine that the cop saw the kid racing down the street, and pursued. When he caught up to him, the kid had crashed. Now, you've all probably felt it... I know I have... that feeling of "I hope this jackass gets what he deserves!" when you see someone driving recklessly. I'm sure that cop thought the same way. He's older, and I know my level of disapproval of such reckless actions has increased considerably with age... and he's got many years on me! He's also been a cop for a long time, and years on the force can make you angry and bitter, especially regarding lawbreakers. I wouldn't doubt for a second that he drove by and thought "good. he had it coming."
However, it is HIS JOB to take the necessary actions as a first responder... not just ignore it.

I don't care how much I don't like someone... if they're in danger, and I could potentially help, I would.

The autopsy said he died on impact. The cop clocked him doing 79 in a 40, which for the road he was on is normal but still no excuse for running. The family of the kid are suing the Tennessee Highway Patrol and the officer himself for $10 million. This cop neglected his duties..period. He shouldn't have ran yes but regardless of that its sad that he waited when he admitted to seeing the wreck to his fellow officers and was also quoted saying the only reason he tried to put the fire out was to "put on a show for the media", that in itself is sicking.

                            Exactly.

There may have been nothing he could do, but for him to intentionally not do his job in such a situation... it is no longer the driver he's dealing with, but the driver's family that he's insulting.

Yes, the kid was being stupid. Yes, his actions were his own, and the outcome was his own fault. However, that doesn't excuse any police officer from doing his duty.
If the cop could have prevented the fire, or removed what may have been a living person from the car before it caught fire, then at least the family could maybe have had an open casket funeral. Now they can't. They can't even see him one last time, because this guy let him burn.
