Post up your custom built computers

In this day and age, we're constantly having to upgrade computers, whether we just buy another prebuilt computer, or take on the task of building our own custom builds. I have build one computer back in the day, which at the time, was using some of the best products on the market. Sadly, that computer quickly became obsolete.

Last year my fiance and I bought a computer while we were in a crunch. Sadly, a year later, we already regret the purchase.

We bought an Acer Aspire X1420G. About a month ago, the hard drive ended up failing, completely. A member on here, Nathan, helped me diagnose my issue, as I was trying to recover my Windows 7 Partition after running a dual boot with Linux Mint. (Another regret)

We determined that the hard drive failed due to the heat within the box. It is a very small box, smaller than the Micro-ATX. Well, here comes the fun part. I priced my old hard drive, and, to my surprise, was the majority of the cost of this computer. Even on Amazon, it was priced going at $250 discounted.

    Dead Drive
    Western Digital
    WD10EADX-22TDHB0
    1.0 TB
    SATA / 32MB Cache
    5400RPM

Today, I purchased a new hard drive. Also a Western Digital.

    New Drive
    Western Digital
    WD5000AAKX
    500GB
    SATA III / 16MB Cache
    7200RPM

I had planned on getting a bigger box to swap the current system into, in hopes of eliminating my overheating issues. I spoke with a couple of my friends, and my best friend had an old computer that he no longer used. He is now an Apple Fanboy.

I was skeptical, because he hadn't used the system in a good 5 years, so I knew that it was outdated. I had never seen the system, so I requested that he send me a photo of the box. Much to my surprise, it was the exact box that I was looking into getting.

Monday, my best friend brought the box to me, while visiting. Instantly, after seeing the box, and the size, I got excited. The wheels in my head are going wild with endless possiblities. I'm wanting to build another machine!

I decided that this box will be strictly for swapping over my current crap system, and using that as the livingroom computer, which we have always used for netflix, movies, and music.

Later on, after my wedding, I will be building a system to my likings. For now, I'll leave you with the picture of the box, and inventory of his old system.

I'm going to ditch this set up, but not sure what to do with it. I don't know if anyone would want this ancient junk. I may just toss it in the dumpster. However, I will be using the tower, and the cooling fans that were included. There was a total of 4 cooling fans.

Now, on to the plans I have for a custom build after my wedding.

I will be choosing another AMD AM3+ Motherboard (my acer has an AM3) that is capable of up to 16GB of DDR3 RAM. I will also be going with either a Hex-core or Octo-core processor, 1000W PSU (Probably UV reactive or an acrylic unit with LEDs), I will most likely be using a Logisys clear acrylic Full ATX tower. I'll be reusing my samsung DVD-RW, and mating it with a BD-RW (blu-ray).

I'm still building the computer in my head, so the list will be changing.

What do you guys have? Did you have someone build it? Did you build it yourself? What are the specs of your box? Do you have any LED fans/lights/etc ? Do you have liquid cooling systems? What OS are you running? What is your main use for this system? Post pictures!

    AMD 645 Propus 3.1Ghz 4x
    ASUS M4A87TD/USB3 AM3 AMD 870 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
    G.SKILL 8GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333
    Gigabyte HD 7770 gpu
    650 watt Coolermaster PSU

Western Digital WD Green WD15EARS 1.5TB SATA (Mass storage drive)
OCZ Agility 3 SSD 60GB (Boot drive)

    Win7 Ultimate 64 bit

CPU is cooled by a Antec Kuhler 620 closed loop system; much cooler than Cooler Master Hyper212+ plus so much quieter.

At one time, my case came with a bunch of fans that had blue LEDS but i've replaced them with regular 120mm fans with no LEDs.

And i built this thing by myself, was freaking easy as hell. You should see the rig i just assembled for my younger brother with his tax return, it's using a AMD FX6300 6x CPU also cooled by a closed loop water system and it keeps temps down at like 9'C when idle and only at 25'C when maxed. Now he's reusing one of my older GPUs temporarily until the summer months when hopefully a new line of GPUs are announced and he can run two of them at once. Anyhow his CPU paired with a Samsung 120gig 840 PRO SSD is blazing fast. I forget what ram i put in there but it was the fastest his motherboard would recognized.

I think once i get some health insurance and my finances under control, i'm going to one up my brother since that's what he basically did to me. Not quite sure what i'm going to do with this rig once i build a new one since it's perfectly capable of running Metro 2033, Skyrim, Fallout NV, and Left for Dead 2 all in ultra with with a decent frame rate.

While you case might be ok, one thing i recommend to people is to get one with some kind of wire management system built into it. You'll pay a little more for it BUT it keeps the cables out of the way to increase air flow so it'll keep your system all that much cooler inside too. As for the PSU, get one that is modular; that means, you only plug in the power cables that you need thus preventing the bottom of the case looking like a rat's nest of unused cables. I like going the SSD route because they are SUPER fast and then using a mechanical drive as my mass storage; PC boot up times are mere seconds and programs load so freaking fast. SSDs don't give you all that much space but with my OS, MS word, and two of the games i play the most, there is still like 9 gigs of storage left on it.

my comp is old but she runs Ubuntu like a boss!

      Core 2 duo @ 2.20GHZ
      4 GB of RAM
      dual 22inch monitors
      Nivida GT240
      680 Watt cooler master PSU
      1 TB Seagate 7200RPM
500GB (full of music and movies) WD 7200RPM
      Realtek 5.1 surround sound card
      Built in Wifi card

I will be getting a new computer soon as this one is a little over 6 years old and she is starting to show her age. i had windows 7 on her and she ran crysis 2 and farcry 3 at almost high graphics.

i converted to linux because i like it better and it is faster/simpler so it runs even faster than it did with windows 7 on it.

I will be implementing cable management on this box. I'm still shopping around, for sure.

The systems you mentioned sound pretty badass. When I build the system for mysekf, I will most likely be running an SSD. Im not a gamer, but I do web design. I am sure that I will benefit from an SSD.

yeah i added an edit i recently upgraded my cooler but it still air cooled and overclocked it to a stable 4.3. I could get 4.5 but I didn't want to push it too far on air cooling.

I have been looking at new cases. One of the ones that I like is the NZXT Switch 810 in white. I'm not exactly sure why I like the white but I do.

Anyways, a thought that i have had running through my head lately is vinyl wrapping a case. Would there be any disadvantages to wrapping a computer case? I would be wrapping each panel individually.

I bought my first new pre-built computer ever a few months ago. I immediately upgraded the power supply and the video card.

The computer is a Lenovo Ideacentre. Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.
                            Intel Core i3-2120 3.30ghz
                            8gb RAM.
500gb HDD, with my old 250gb added as a slave.

I added an NVIDIA GeForce GT 520... it was cheap, and suited my needs (dual monitors, with enough power to play Diablo 3, which blew up my old computer... )
Power supply, I forget... 400 watts, I think. Upgraded from the stock 280 watt unit that came with the Lenovo (the underpowered power supply is what killed my last computer when I pushed too hard with Diablo 3.)

Looks like this (stock photo, since mine is all dusty, and missing a side panel due to video card cables that won't let me install it... )

It was actually cheaper for me to buy this computer and upgrade it to suit my needs than it was to build a new one from scratch. Computers are so cheap these days that building them, even with cheapie parts, isn't really the best route... unless you're building a crazy gaming machine (because those things can be priced absurdly for prebuilt machines!)
