It IS ironic if it's true... as the Big Bang theory is generally rejected by devout Catholics. If you find the ironic statement (which may very well be true) offensive, I think you should take a look at your own blatant reference to homosexuality (and probably pedophilia, judging by most cracks on Catholic priests lately). I find that MUCH more offensive.

well i guess the two could be interchangable. Im not retarded so its bad humor...but i guess when people use the term retarded its not in the context of someone having a mental handicap.

Yep, George Lemaitre was a catholic preist. Unfortuntately Catholics throughout history have taken this fact and twisted it beyond recognition claiming the big bang a work of god, and blah blah blah.
The truth is that there was no religious background to the theory (in fact, it is based off a combination of the Einsteins theory of relativity and Hubbles expanding universe observation). Lemaitre studied Physics and mathematics before he joined the priest hood, he was one of the few people in history able to come to peace with both science and religion.
the term "big bang" actually wasn't coined until the 1960s, and it was ment to be a derogatory phrase.
The funny thing is that if there IS any sort of all-powerful being, there's no reason why such events wouldn't be the methods used for creation. IMO it works just as well from a religious standpoint as it does from a non-religious one. Makes a hell of a lot more sense than "there wasn't... and now there was"
And starchland, if you were just joking, then I suppose I understand... It bugs me when people get overly bent out of shape for no good reason.
