I never get why religion and science are viewed by so many as complete opposites. I mean I can understand why there are people that think that..the world IS chock full of idiots.

I'd answer this, but it would turn this thread in the complete wrong direction. so ill stop myself now.Originally posted by wafflefriesI never get why religion and science are viewed by so many as complete opposites. Science is the study of what is known, or the study of what is unknown using what is known to arrive at a logical conclusion. Religion (well... spirituality... religion IS mainly a crock) is the faith that something exists for no true logical reason. The whole point of any religion is to believe in something that has no concrete scientific evidence.
It IS scientifically possible that there is a "creator". It IS scientifically possible that everything is just a coincidence. It is impossible to prove either standpoint based on our current knowledge and abilities.
The point of my statement wasn't that science and religion are similar... but that if there is some sort of all-powerful creator, the scientific process (creation of the universe, evolution, etc...) that are so often vehemently rejected by the religious could very well be the processes by which this creator... well... created.
The very point of science is not to prove, but to disprove. The very point of religion is to prove without evidence. Until the religious are open to doubt their faith, science and religion will never go hand in hand.

i dont think ive ever believed in the "big bang" theory. i mean there had to have been something there to have those 2 things(or one thing) to go bang. lol.
sometimes you can see things in life actually pop into perfect place somewhere. but if you look at the chance of everything in life just pop into place as acurately as they are(the distance of the earth from the sun, the sum of oxygen and water to make air, the animals on the planet), i dont think it could happen.
but i have always wondered about religion tho. why is it so many of them are so backwards. all of them were just made by one person and everyone followed that person. how can you explain the homosexuality in the organizations? how can you follow somethign that was made because one person looked at the Bible and made his own interpritation of it?
science is about the only thing out there that can explain anything. but thats the thing. faith is just that. "belief in the things not yet seen."

I recently thought of an interesting thing regarding religion... and the judeo-christian concept of the creation of human life. Men have nipples. Useless, worthless, meaningless nipples. Why? Didn't woman come from man? Shouldn't a woman have useless leftover man-parts somewhere? Nipples are useful on a woman, not on a man. Also, when humans form, they start female, and if the chemical composition is correct, they become male.
I'm sure there's an explanation for this somewhere. I'm sure I'm not the first, or last, to ponder this... but I find it interesting.

1. the big bang does not state that there was "nothing" before the bang. Even Discounting the many respected theories of a cyclical, eternal universe (e.g, multiple big bangs), the BB theory states that there was a singularity before the "Explosion". some have even claimed that it wasn't a singularity at all, but a mere cloud of energy. Where did the energy come from? we're not sure yet. This is where the idea of a creator comes in. But there was a time we didn't know where lightning came from, so give it time.Originally posted by Shadow1i dont think ive ever believed in the "big bang" theory. i mean there had to have been something there to have those 2 things(or one thing) to go bang. lol.
besides, "who created the creator?". The common answer i get to that question is that "he just always existed". But why couldn't matter and energy have just "always existed?". its a hypocritical answer.
Our brains have evolved over time to believe that everything has a beginning and an end, this probably stems back to our Darwinian past, used for survival. We have a very difficult time comprehending something that is eternal, its just not something we are exposed to directly, but it doesn't mean its impossible.
This shows you have one of two things (or both): A lack of understanding of the vast size and shear volume of the universe,or a lack of understanding in probability.Originally posted by Shadow1sometimes you can see things in life actually pop into perfect place somewhere. but if you look at the chance of everything in life just pop into place as acurately as they are(the distance of the earth from the sun, the sum of oxygen and water to make air, the animals on the planet), i dont think it could happen.
The distance of the earth to the sun isn't perfect. If it wasn't for the CO2 in our atmosphere, the earth would be a giant ball of solid Ice. There are 100 billion billion (not a typo, thats 100 billion "billions") of galaxy's in our observable universe, each with 100 billion billion stars, just like our sun. To put that inperspective, thats 1 star for every grain of sand in all the deserts on earth, PER GALAXY). So your trying to tell me that its improbable one of these stars has a planet within the "habitable zone"? (which by the way, for our specific sun, extends from about the orbit of venus to the orbit of mars). give me a break. its completely improbable that NON of these stars have habitable planets.
The same concept can be applied to anything.
Well, i guess we agree on that point!Originally posted by Shadow1but i have always wondered about religion tho. why is it so many of them are so backwards. all of them were just made by one person and everyone followed that person. how can you explain the homosexuality in the organizations? how can you follow somethign that was made because one person looked at the Bible and made his own interpritation of it?

Nipples on a man are just dormant, with the proper amount of estrogen any man can start lactating.Originally posted by deevergoteOh, I don't claim... I profess! Your nipples are absolutely worthless (until Val says otherwise... then I simply can't argue...)

Regarding the existence of the big bang....for now it can only be looked at as a theory with which every convenient proof is applied; however it is completely possible that energy (like an all professed God) has always existed, only to manifest into different entities at certain times (or dimensions).
I heard something really cool once...
Quantum Physics Description of Energy: Everything is energy. Universe, Galaxy, Solar System, Planet, People, Molecules, Atoms, Energy. Energy can never be created or destroyed. Always was and always has been. Everything that has ever existed has always exists. Its moving into form, through form and out of form.
Theologian's Description of God: God can never be created or destroyed. Always was and always has been. All that ever was and always will be. Always moving into form, through form, and out of form.
The above is the same description with different terminologies.Last edited by lokuputha; 01-31-2008, 12:26 PM.DEVOTE

i support that there is other life else where. look at our sun compared to the galaxy. we aint shit.Originally posted by Accord R33

the closes object in space sofar that has a possible chance of supporting life is a moon called europa.(one of jupiters moons) due to the gravataional pull between planet and other neighboring moons. its an ice covered moon but with the tug of war betwen gravity, it is sufficient enough that the inner core is still liquid and able to support life.
i failed astronomy because that class was soo complex, but it is interesting.
