ive always used 5w-20 in the winter and 10w-30 in the summer, i mean my auto teacher told us that the weight kinda corresponds to the weather and i live in jersey so in winter gets below 20 alot and sumetimes into the single digits and at nite time even in to the negative numbers, then when summer rolls around it gets into the 90s sometimes 100s so i then use the thicker oil...correct me if thats wrong?

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)
Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.
These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.
1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.
2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.
3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.
4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.
The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.
The rules for the overall forum can be found here:
http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/forumdisplay.php?f=144
Read them. You will be expected to follow them.

I beleive most small engine hybrid cars use the 0W oil.Originally posted by DarkRidgeRacerI had a friend at work that use to be a mechanic. He said that in Texas, 10w30 is recommended. I've seen a new oil on the market but know sure if its new or not but 0w30? Never heard of it.
For example the Honda Insight which uses 0w20 oil.

All new Hondas run 5w20, which is whats in my car. DO NOT RUN OW20, Ow-- is too thin for your engine. it is strickly for hybrid engine use! Someone asked why you want to run 10w30 in the summer time. 10w30 is a thicker oil and as the weather/temp warms your viscosity (sp?) breaks down and you would want a heavier oil.

Yes, I asked why you'd want a thicker oil.
Do you have any idea what the 10W (or 0W, for that matter) means?
My thermostat controls the running temp of my car. The running temp of my car is the same in winter and summer.
I've used 0W-30 in my Honda, Audi and Nissan without issue.2003 Maxima SE Titanium Edition

your car runs at mostly the same temp once it has reached operating temp.
But we have the oil ratings we have (5w-30, 10w-30) because of cold starts. Yes I know there is more to it then JUST that but the reason for that range of viscosity is due to the engine being MUCH MUCH colder when it first starts...keep in mind...while your engine is not "cold" to the touch per say, in relation to operating temp it is cold. Now if you are in very cold climates you have to add to that.__

go synthetic 5W-50
Don't listen to these guys talk about what they think is best... go do some RESEARCH about the truth of what oil is.. especially "synthetic" and come up with your own conclusion.
go to http://www.synlube.com/publicat.htm and check out what they say....
Now I am not saying spend $50 on real synthetic oil but look at the science of how oil changes as it is being used. Look at what additives are used. Learn what it means to say "synthetic' on a bottle. learn about how they reuse motor oil. There is so much behind this besides just asking what type of oil should I use... read this website and some others and come up with your own decision.
and BTW your engine LOOOOOVES thick oil! these dudes who think thinner is better or think that ambient temperature doesn't matter should not be taken seriously!AD5OS

There's a website called SmartGas that has tips for higher mpg, in it they talk about oil and thin oil is not recomended. They're saying 20w50 and 15w40 is the way to go, adding maybe one quart of synthetic 20w50 to the rest. I wasn't too sure about this until I read comments on another site from a del sol owner who was burning a tank a day going to college. He did just what they said and it did increase his milege, I beleive it was 2-3 mpg more just from the oil. I want to hook up my new oil pressure gauge before I go to heavier oil though, I'd like to see the difference and make sure it doesn't get too high, hate to lose a crank seal or something.
