Code 43 Help.

Recently I solved my sputtering problem thru new plugs and wires (so far).

Now everytime I gun it I can smell some unburned gas or unburned smell from the exhaust area. It also gives me code 43.

So is the oxygen sensor at fault?


I have new fuel filter and my injectors were recently inspected and they are clean like they should be.
I also cleaned the EGR valve and the IACV. No oil on the spark plugs and their electrode sign is normal. fin

The car runs perfectly fine though. Pulls real good.

A lot of people say that the o2 sensor is the cause of that code. I got it after my car sat for a long time (it came on at high speeds), and then it just stopped coming up. I guess the o2 sensor was dirty or something, perhaps? I dunno... but it works, and I didn't change anything.

I have to check my o2 sensor then, because at first it gave me code 1 then after a week which is today code 43 came up. So not really sure it is since it's brand new and I spent a fortune ($220). Also that smell is killing me.

P.S. I'm being paranoid again , arrr!..

If the sensor is new and OEM (and it is) then it shouldn't be giving you a problem. For all I know, my o2 sensor is from 1992! I've never replaced it, so if it's not original, it's from before 2001.

When I left the country then came back 2 months later my battery was a total loss. After that it fired right up with a fresh one.

I just got that under regular driving conditions. Like you said the o2 might just be dirty or so (it's only a year old). I'll check that out.

Is it also a possibility I have a clogged cat? or an exhaust leak? hmmm.

I have an exhaust leak at the cat, since it's stock and the rest of the system is larger aftermarket stuff. The rear passengers get a good blast of exhaust fumes when the driver gets on it. You wouldn't smell it if it were behind you like it's supposed to be, so that's a leak. I don't have much to add on the code 43, unless you want to check your FPR or fuel pressure itself, your pump is not dead if the car still runs.

I doubt it's the FPR since my can runs well.

I have an o2 sensor that just came in , hope this solves it.

My vote is for the O2 sensor as well, especially if you got a #1 before that. My car is doing that right now, started out with a #1 and moved into a #43. It seems that as long as you don't have any big driveability issues (stumbling, etc from lack of fuel) it's the O2.

My car gave me a code 43 om saturday after i spenthours changing/tuning up everything. I hit WOT for like 5 seconds then less than a minute later i had CEl, checked it, it was 43. I woke the next morning and it CEL was gone. I dont a exhaust leak on the flex pipe I'm thinking o2 sensor also but if mine comes back i'm getting a new fuel filter and o2 sensor.

first look for a fuel leak somewhere. "Code 43 Fuel Supply System" if theres a leak the sensor will pick up a problem and start adding more fuel. (fuel regulator or o2 sensor)basically it will compensate for a problem. check simple things before you start adding parts. if you have a dx/lx and the exhaust is leaking before o2 sensor then you might get this code. same goes for a ex/se. 02 sensor isnt reading correctly and a code will set. simple problems will cause bigger issues.

Apparently , a new Denso sensor is currently installed in replace of this one. So far so good as I gave it a test drive. The smell is still there but I'll give it 3 days.

I did got a #1 before the #43 , so hopefully this is it. I used to have a stumbling and small misfires but it's gone right after I changed the plugs and wires.

I don't have a leak of fuel. I have an A1 and I'm trying to smell the manifold but does not match the smell at the muffler. I think I'm running rich or so. AFAIK , when o2 sensors fail , it will make the ECU dump more fuel into the chamber and aslo my mileage worsens these past days. I have 120 miles in a half tank.


One more thing , when I tried to remove the sensor , I did it by hand? So it was apparently loose a bit. I was wondering if it was moving around when I hit bumps. Anyway I tightened the new one in and hopefully will get off my ass.

thats makes sense, i have a A1 also but this weekend I didnt notice a exhaust leak on the flex pipe(will be repaired this week) so that might be my issue. Drove all day today and no CEL yet.

When I pulled my O2 it was Stark white, much more than that, so I don't think lean is your problem

that o2 looks normal to me, not to say its not dead
