alternator!??

i was on the highway, and my tach and speedo started fluctuating.
5 mins later. it died while driving.

we push started and it was running for 2 mins.
it started "puffing" white smoke in the exhaust.
all lights came up. then it completly died.

is it the alternator?


i had a slight revving problem. it fluctuated from 500-1200!!
can this could have contributed to this problem?

i need help please!!

I almost want to say ECU, but with the fluctuating idle that sounds like IACV. Either way it sounds like you have major issues, as in more than one.

I guess if your wondering about your alternator you could take it off and have autozone test it.

to double check the fast way, if you can keep the car running long enough, pull the neg cable on batt, if the car dies its your alt, if it stays running your alt is fine.

when you can also, check your anti freeze, make sure you still have sum in there, you said white smoke came out the muffler...

i had my sister in cd5 to push it.

that sir, i have not checked!
but it was too hot to open.
although i could have checked the reserved!
did not check at all!


some datails that my be of importance!:
i had my engine (block and head) replaced 2 months ago.
mechanic said i had warranty for 6 months.
but only on block and head. not sensors or other stuff.
how can i use this to my advantage?

I would say alternator, and it wouldnt start (with out push starting) when it died because the battery was dead from running the car.

but its kinda hard to tell with out being there.

WAIT MY BAD GUYS!!!

I HAD THE ALTERNATOR MIXED WITH DISTRIBUTOR!

can the distributor cause this?

Im still going to say your alternator, because it will cause your gauges to screw up.

Did your car have power when you turned the ignition to on?

yes, all the light were on.
but would just click when i turn the key.
after a while all lights were dimming which is obviously a dead battery.

you said the car is at the mechanic , let them diagnose it , it sounds to me like a bad alternator and a dead battery..........

but i just wanna see what could have caused this.
this mechanic did my head and block swap (f22a6).
after 2 weeks i had the idle problem.
the mechanic said he was gonna fix my revving problem.
he did something to the idle thing but the problem was still there.
now he says its not covered under his warranty because its a sensor.

To check the alt you pull the pos cable off the battery if you pull the negative you take away the ground to the entire system.

Your coolant level could play a role in your weird idle, maybe.

distributor is a good posability I know the ignitor will make your tach jump randomly before it goes out completly.

But if agood mechanic is checkin it out u should be alright

Update!!

OK so turns out the problem is the distributor.
mechanic just called and its ready to drive again.

glad you figured it out, but yeah it was probably your ignitor unit that failed since you mentioned that the tach was jumpy. When they fail, they'll just die all of a sudden sometimes when the car is running when you make a turn...it'll die and start back up off/on like that.
