ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

Read them. You will be expected to follow them.

    Jumping Tach

Whenever i start my car or sometimes when im cruising my tach will freak out and jump like 1000 rpms and then it will settle back down until it does it again. Any ideas what this could be??

odd reason, but mine did this when the altenator was going out. it totally went away after i had it changed.

A jumping tach is USUALLY due to a failing ignitor.

Would that cause the tach to jump?

I never thought of that. I just figured the VSS would make the speedo screwy, but not the tach.

Mine had a bad connection on the ground wire. Had recently put a new clutch in and left a ground wire hanging loose somewhere. $90 diagnostic fee, took like 5 minutes for the guy to find and fix. Sorry can't remember which wire.

if its your tach jumping, its your igniter going out.

If its the speedo jumping, its the VSS going out. I changed my speed sensor and that resolved all the problems.

All you need to change out on that is the top electronic part w/ the plug thats what ususally fails, the bottom gear part never gets bad.

Igniter going bad, or it might just be a loss wire in the dizzy that going to the igniter.

mine does this crap too, cept after it has its seizure it gets stuck at 5k... i replaced the vss and solved this issue for a while, so i guess it is the ignitor going out of business...

Very likely an ignitor problem. The tach signal comes off of it

                          life is good.

Something else you might want to check is your O2 sensor. It will also make your tachometer jump up and down and idle and driving speeds. The vehicle speed sensor "VSS" isn't directly controlling your tachometer. It will work just fine even with the VSS removed.
