ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

    adjusting cables.

hey all, i slightly been tighting up the throttle cable and got a nicer responce under accelleration but my question is what exactly does the other cable do that traveles to the tranny? this is a 93 automatic ex. i also at the same time slightly been tighting this cable up to. i read in the chilton manuel that this cable should have a tiny bit of play. does it open a valve or something in the tranny? the main reason why im doing this to see if i can solve a tranny problem, i replaced the shift solenoid but unfortunatly didnt work. as a refresher whats going on is when you start to accellerate at a lower speed it wont shift into 3rd unless you take your foot off the gas pedal. but if you take off quickly it seems to shift correctly.....pretty messed up huh. the fluid is topped off and not crazy worn out looking and there are no blinking light. anyone else have this problem?

The other cable you've been adjusting is known as a 'kickdown' cable. It tells the transmission that you're pressing down harder on the accelerator and makes the tranny downshift. Loosen it back up, your problem should go away.

You really should get a book on basic auto mechanics before you start adjusting things you're unsure of. You could screw something up, including yourself.

well said well said, what i have noticed by doing this is when the tranny downshifts (slowing down) it smoothed out. before it was erratic and harder like banging down a gear. so if i put it back were it was itll shift like crap again. so doing this didnot solve my 2nd to third shift. my next plan is fluid and filter change. thanks visual poet for the book on basics, lets see i may not be ASE certified but have been working and been around the automotive field my whole life or should i say since 10 when my grandfather had a body shop and uncle had street hot rods. Ive ran not just worked at automotive parts retail stores since ive been a teen, now im almost 40 and im a traveling salesman of autobody parts so ya you can say i may know a thing or two about cars. i knew its a kick down cable but the last time i tried posting this issue and asked about the cable no one new what i was talking about and suggested to replace the solenoid which didnt work but i wished it did. i just hope your comment about basic book was not going to the sarcastic level and you could be a great help in the future because every car is different and they all have there special quirks. and the only time ive screwed up my self from working on a car or truck was sharring blood with it and getting scrapped knuckles LOL.

None of my comments were meant to be sarcastic. If I ever reply sarcastically, you'll know. I replied as I would to anyone who made a post like yours. Based on what I've seen you post in this thread and others, you come across as someone younger, just getting into cars and unfamiliar with the mechanical workings of automobiles, and that's the advice I'd suggest to anyone in that situation.
I do appreciate your touch of sarcasm in compiling your list of experiences that give you experience in the automotive field, but given the questions you've asked and the image you show here on the site, you don't appear to have picked up much on the basic mechanics. (I mean, c'mon, you asked how to cut holes in the bumper for your fogs. I don't do body work, and I know you can cut them out with a utility knife and a steady hand (watched it done nicely by a friend of mine), or a dremel and a cutoff wheel if your hand's not so steady)
I'd still recommend loosening the cable up a little, so it has a little slack and you might also check it for kinks or pinched spots; those can keep the car from shifting correctly also. Also look for any pinched or cracked vacuum lines or electrical connections unhooked from the tranny. If the filter and fluid don't fix things, you can try the TCU, but you may be looking at a new tranny.

As for my creds; I'm 42. I started learning about cars as soon as I could stay the hell out of the way while watching my dad, uncles, a couple of aunts and my grandfather working on cars. I started reading everything I could get my hands on about cars when I was about 9 (I had an 11th grade comprehension level at that age), did my first brake job at 11, replaced my first transmission at 14, did my first RWD engine swap at 16, rebuilt my first engine at 17, my first FWD engine swap at 30. My grandfather retired from GM, and I've worked for a couple of different garages over the years. I can count on one hand the number of times I've had a car in the shop, and three of those times, they misdiagnosed the problem, even when I told them what the problem was before they touched the keys.
I know about each car having it's own quirks, but individual quirks aren't something that can be diagnosed over the internet. Messing around with parts of the car you're not familiar with can cause a situation that you don't discover until you're driving the car. I've seen people adjust the kickdown cable and cause the throttle to bind up in the open position, but not until they stomped on the gas to pass someone, leaving them accelerating down the road at WOT.

I know you have a couple of kids, so anytime you think you might be able to fix something you're not sure about, decide if it's worth risking them. Even though you've been around cars, a book on the basics isn't a bad idea, since you have to admit your knowledge on cars is less than all encompassing.

I hope you don't take anything I've posted in a negative or know-it-all manner. None of it is intended as such.
