ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

Read them. You will be expected to follow them.

    When accessory belts break

Will they squeal, or will they just snap?

    Or, which is most common?

when they squel that means they are loose..do a visual inspection on it for cracks or dry rott.but they usually tend to just snap.

Sometimes they'll shred from being rubbed by the lip of the pulley. Either way they need to be replaced.

I've had worn belts squeal or make an annoying chirp every rotation.

Belts will also shred or rip. Once they get a shred or rip in them, they'll be more likely to snap. This is why it is important to visually inspect your timing belt at service intervals like oil changes.

I've only ever had one belt snap on me and it was the water pump belt on my Contour. The water pump actually seized up and the pulley stopped turning and the crank kept turning the belt til either it overheated and snapped or came off and caught something in the engine bay. When I pulled over and popped the hood, there was coolant everywhere under the hood and my belt looked like an exploded tire.

squealing seems to be pretty common. even new belts will squeal after a little bit because they will stretch and need to be readjusted. cheap belts will just squeal sometimes too.

if your belt is shredding something bad may be happening, like a pulley's bearings being used up and the pulley tilting. this lets the belt rub, like stated above, and eventually it will all be shredded off. happened to me on my diesel truck last year or so. it had a tensioner though and the bushing in it was wore out.

Here's a crappy pic showing an accessory belt with a rip in it. Look closely and you'll see about an 1/8" into the belt is a nice long rip in the belt. It looks as if the pulley groove has worn through the belt.

I guess it all depends on the situation. A friend of mine has a 91 civic sedan and her alternator belt broke just the other day. She said she hadn't started it in about a year and when she did the alternator pulley was seized causing the belt to rub itself to death on the pulley. She said it was pouring smoke and she thought the car was on fire. Awesome
