    Tips on removing an engine

Hi all. I have a 91 accord wagon and am planning on removing the engine in order to rebuild it. I have the shop manual but its not very specific on how I jack up the car; do I use jack stands on all four support points, or do I just use 2 jack stands for the front? I am thinking that its safer to jack it up on both the front and the rear but I don't know, I've never removed an engine before.

An answer on this, and any other tips would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Start off reading this. Also I may suggest if you've never removed an engine before, try to get some one else to help you that has.

Thanks. The videos would be much better though if they were better quality , it looks like he filmed them with a socket wrench, lol.

Do you know of any other 'how to' videos or threads (with pics)?

Are you planning on removing the engine through the bottom?
Don't do that, get a engine crane and lift it out.

Follow the guide that hyoslvr posted.
And also read this one - http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthre...&threadid=8849

But first ask yourself if you sure you are capable of performing the task - Only reason I say that is simply because you made this thread about where to put the axle stands . . .

If you are, then good luck

          ^^^^
also make sure you actually watch the videos multiple times, rewatch things that look a bit confusing, look into it, find out where everything goes, etc etc. If you don't have anyone that has CB7 swapping experience, see if you have any guys who actually did a swap

seen a Ford guy help a civic guy take his engine and properly put it all back in his SI because the civic guy messed it up when he did his swap. Civic guy was confused how the Ford guy knew more then he did. (ford guy has 40 years of experience being a mechanic versus the honda guy-few months )

I definetly don't recommend you do it on your own.

I did not make this thread to ask where to put the jack stands (I have the shop manual for that), I was asking if I needed to jack up all 4 sides of the car in order to take the engine out. I am confident I can perform this task, its just going to take commitment and possibly someone to help me a bit when I am actually taking the engine out with a crane. I am only afraid of a jack stand giving out on me when I am under the car, having seen a few horror stories online.

            So here is my question:

I still need to know whether or not I need to jack up all 4 corners of the car. The guys at the autoparts store told me that I just needed to jack up the front but I think it maybe safer/more easy to jack it up on all 4 sides.

            What do you guys think?

Btw, thanks for the guide, it is a fine addition to the shop manual I have and its easier to read than those videos. The quality of those videos is terrible, were they taken with a socket wrench? lol.

You do not need to jack up all 4 corners, nor would it be safer. Secure the rear wheels with wheel chocks, and you'll be set.

For a guy that's asking for help, you sure are liberal with the criticism of the help that's given to you.

How about you film your engine removal, and write a better DIY so others can benefit from the higher quality?

commonly overlooked items are wires/coolant/vac lines under an intake manifold. know all your connections before attempting the job, so you can sign off on what you have pulled off to free your engine.

jack stands rarely ever fail, and ones that may are usualy being used beyond their limits/abused, or rusted out. I always us 2 jack stands and leave the jack on one side jacked up to raise the car(snugly fit in there).

The chances of 2 good jackstands failing are lesss than winning the lottery, and if they did both fail and crush you karma says you deserve it.

You never know though, people online have said to always put tires or something under neath just in case... at least a jack or something.
I am doing this on grass / gravel and the ground is not be completely flat. It maybe a good idea to put some jacks or tires underneath somewhere. Not sure where to put them though.

But how high should I jack up the front end and will I really be able to pull the engine with the front end lifted up? It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

Jack the car up to remove/loosen everything you have to, axles, rear mount, pull hosts from under the IM, pull plugs/harness, etc... Then lower the car, with rims on it, makes removing the engine much easier. Sounds like you should have some help with you, no disrespect, but if you can't figure where to put the jack stands or a backup tire, you shouldn't do this alone.

Thanks everyone for your help. I have some other questions. What are all of the tools that I need to have for this job? I just obtained a 36 mm socket for the axle nuts (which I heard are a PAIN to loosen... tips?).

The list for the CRX videos is this:

                              "Materials:

Sockets (10-20 and a 32mm for the axles) [check]
                              Ratchets [check]
                              Wrenches [check]
                              Hammer [check]
                              Ball Joint Seperator [check]
                              Jack [check]
                              Jack Stands [check]
                              Wire Cutters [check]
                              Screwdriver [check]
5/16 Punch (bitch pin removal) [I think]
                              Cherry Picker"
                              [check]

I have most of these but I understand that he has a CRX and its a manual tm, I have an accord wagon that is automatic. I was reading the shop manual and they called for a tool known as a "puller pawl". What is this and is it really necessary? But If anyone thinks that this is an incomplete list of parts, please do add.

                              Thanks.

                              EDIT:

Since I have the shop manual I think it will be safe to follow it as my main instructions, this is a good idea right?
