ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

    Trans help

Today I had two very bad mis-shifts. It's an automatic.
The first time was on the highway, it down shifted right as I let off the gas, after a brief second of 5k revs it shifted back into gear.
The second was pulling out of my GFs house. Rapid acceleration to 40, then let off, then a weird down then back up shift.
I looked down at occasion 2 and saw my D4 light flashing.
In the past, I've gotten codes, 1 2 7 8. This time it was only code 9:
9-Counter shaft or transmission speed pulse generator open or shorted.

I'll double check to see that the others aren't there, as that would indicate a bad TCU. I'll also recheck the capacitors.

So, what does code 9 mean?

Edit: My speedometer was still working while the light was flashing.

27.5 MPG, no AC, cruising at 90 with occasional gridlock. 40 degrees Fahrenheit

    From my searching so far:
It seems to be the primary or secondary speed sensor, for the trans. This is different from our VSS. I don't know where they are located or if they are serviceable.
It could also be my solenoids, which I've had problems with in the past.

What I'm thinking now is a wiring issue. The code 9 doesn't appear immediately or at any specific speed, rather, after a (usually) short period of driving.
In the past, I have soaked my trans wiring harness with degreaser and water. I'm thinking that could've been a bad idea.

During driving: Until the code happens, I have relatively normal driving. After it occurs, I'll get a few jerks, then I can keep driving. However, the shifts are MUCH higher and the revs aren't where they are supposed to be. Highway is normally about 3.5k at 90 mph. Now it's around 4k, but it moves. I can also feel excess vibration, to me it feels like something is spinning way to fast.

No visible burned capacitors. I may make a junkyard run to pick up a few extra units.

Can someone give me a crash course in tracing wiring? I have a multimeter and can test resistance and continuity.

Found what looks to be very promising information. Very promising, because there is little documentation that I could find online.
      First, the locations:

      Installation and removal:

As the very helpful posts continue
I popped my hood in preparation for testing everything tomorrow, and I decided to inspect a problem that occurred shortly after my trans issues started.
Since the sensor will be on the passenger side, I started there. Working my way to the firewall, I peeked at the ABS reservoir. It seemed empty, and upon further inspection, it was!
I'm thinking (without anymore inspection) that one of the high pressure lines blew. Since the sensors are over there, they either got coated or the burst cut the wires.
Either way, I know I'll have lots to look at tomorrow!

Hey, hope you get it all figured out, when my dad owned the cb before me, it would downshift on the highway then upshift after a few seconds for no apparent reason, we thought it was the ecu so I kicked the passenger floor and it doesn't do it anymore. Now I don't think that fixed it but you can always try. LOL Not really on topic with this thread but I felt like you were all alone talking to yourself. I wouldn't be surprised if that line bursting either hit a sensor or shorted one out. Keep me updated, I'm not much help but I'd sure like to know how it turns out.

I don't think kicking it would help either

            I've found yet another problem!
The cv boots I tried to redo on the passenger side. The outer I know has a hole in it. When I removed the air box and battery to try to find the counter shaft speed sensor I looked down and saw the inner boot was ripped to shreds!
I believe this could've contributed to the counter shaft speed sensor. I tried measuring resistance and I got absolutely nothing. I called up my work and had them order me a new one. In the mean time I'm going to pull this existing sensor and look for shorts. I'm also going to pull the battery tray and see where the abs is leaking.

Here is the solution to at least one problem!

That looks more like a problem to at least one solution. If you're good with electronics, you might be able to solder that back on there. Grab yourself a good iron and a piece of wire about the thickness of a paper clip. Tin the wire, stick it in the plug, tin the wires broken in the plug, solder them together. Strip and tin the wire out of the plug, and solder it to the wire you just soldered into the plug. Make it flush so it doesn't look like crap, and seal it all up with some heatshrink tubing (that you put on the wire before you soldered it all together), or wrap it up with some quality electrical tape. Or just buy a new whatever that is.

Well there's yer problem right there! lol Seems as though the gremlins have been going at it under your hood. I'd try what reklipz suggested. Every time I change the oil I expect to see a hug tear in the boots but they seem to be holding up well, I hear those aren't to fun to replace.
How do you get your MPG so high? I've got the a4 with auto tranny in my 91 and gas seems to be going through it pretty fast, but it runs just fine. Maybe I'm too much of a lead foot. LOL

That sensor was the problem. I'm back to good old slightly slipping trans!

It was rather difficult. I drove on cruise control at 80 mph for about 250 miles.
I did have the ac on, which is why I was so surprised to see it that high.

Glad you got it all figured out man, I just filled up my tank to the top (rare event now a days) so I should be getting an MPG figure pretty soon. Praying its above 30 LOL
