Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

    92 Hard Shifting Problems

Okay, I'm new here as well as being new to owning a cb7 and it is having a few problems. The first is the transmission system, when I start the car and put it into reverse it will hesitate for approximately 1 second. When I back out of my parking spot and put it into drive it hesitates for another 3 to 4 seconds before it kicks into gear. Other than that it will run up the rpm in second a bit before it shifts to third (all while in d4 by the way). It shifts a little rough through the rest of the gears but not bad enough to consider a problem. What should I do I have no Idea where to start.
Here's what I'm working with tell me what you think.

Are there any other potential culprits or is it pretty much straight forward tear into the tranny?

Yeah pretty much man, Remember they are 20+year old trannies, The Torque Converter is pretty much the reason why your car goes high in rev from second to third, Just make sure your tranny fluid and good and whenever you can Find a good Tranny

The first thing you should do is change the transmission fluid. Use Honda ATF ONLY. Nothing else. No additives. If there's not much damage done, the ATF may alleviate your problem. So few people understand that changing transmission fluid is as important as changing engine oil... and when we get these cars, they could very well have 20 year old fluid in the transmission!

Try the change first. If that doesn't help, then start thinking about replacing parts.
A hard shift is better than a soft shift, though. Hard shifting at least means nothing is slipping!

Sorry for taking so long. I've been so broke here lately that keeping gas in it has been worrying me. (and y'all know that means I was in a rough spot) I still haven't been able to change the fluid, but I still plan on doing it soon. is there any good diy on the shifting solenoid or is it pretty much straight forward? I really want to keep her so anything to get her fixed right will help and is very much appreciated.

+I found out that the ground from the battery to the frame has 6 tiny wires holding it together... I fixed it, and it helped ever-so-slightly. At least I'd like to believe so anyway.

To be honest, a new tranny is the last thing for some one who's strap for money like the OP. Let's try other cheaper alternatives before giving up on the tranny. The tranny on our cars are built like a tank if you maintain it well. I have seen poorly maintained tranny lasted. Let's do a few things first:

                    1) Change the fluid as others have suggested. Get 8 quarts of Honda's fluid. Each time you change the fluid it would take about 2.5Qt for the auto. After the first change, drive it for about 500 miles, this can varies but I would do it no more than 1000 miles. Replace it again. This 2nd time drive about 1000-2000 miles to let the new fluid mix in with the old. Then change it again. Remember to make sure the engine is not running with the car level flat as possible and check the fluid level at between or at the high mark. Try not to go over the high mark.

                    2) Take off both of the solenoids, apply 12V to each to test each of the round solenoid. Clean off the area and the screens. Try not to let any dirt fall into the tranny solenoid areas. Bolt them up with torques specs.

                    3) Take off the interior gear box cover. Clean the inside best you can then lube them up and if you could follow the gear cable and lube that up.

                    4) While you are at it, check the kick down cable and lube. Also check the looseness of the throttle cable, lube and tighten, but not too tight so the throttle can still close 100%.

After doing all this, and the problem is still unbearable then consider the tranny replacement.

As always, good maintenance is much cheaper than fixing and replacing. Maintain it and don't let it fail before worrying about it. One system failure will effect other systems as well.

Good luck and keep us posted.

On my car, replacing the front dog bone helped big time on shifting and also the car taking off at the red light. The mount is only about $21 and the inserts are only about $22. Buy the manual tranny mount if you want to use inserts. The auto mount won't fit the inserts.

Don't be sorry, I put food on the table, I got a job, a place to live and all that I need. I just don't want this car to end up on fire someday. I feel like the previous owner took a few short cuts, and now I'm trying to correct them.

Now, as far as changing the tranny oil as suggested, that is just pulling the plug, and not doing the filter change correct? Wouldn't it be a good Idea to replace the filter as well on the first go, and try to drain all of the fluid?
