    Nitrogen in your tires?

Hey guys just a simple question for you....

Just bought a set of continental dws tires and was wondering if it was worth filling them with nitrogen? Heard it helps gas mileages, any performance benefits?

Nitrogen is purported to increase the continuity of air pressure in the tire, thus maximizing tread wear, as well as gas economy; which would be considered performance improvements. However regular air is just fine.

Well i do work at a shop where we sell nitrogen at 5bucks a tire.... I have it on my car and seems it helps...well it does reduce wear on tire little bit amd i do get like little more on my tank.....i know for sure it doesnt escape as like oxygen..so pretty worth if you dont care about 20 bucks but once you order it. You have a history in there book so you can always stop by the shop and fill in nitrgoem for free, usually.

You see nitrogen usually used in tires with TPS sensors. Some of the parts on some style sensors can corrode in the presence of moisture thats in regular air. Nitrogen thats used by shops or dealers is "dry", as in there is zero water vapor, so the sensors wont corrode.

If it saves time and money I'm sure it will pay for itself. Just have to make sure my tires aren't one way directional for rotation reasons lol.

          Thanks guys!

In order for a tire to really be filled with nitrogen, there would need to be a complete vacuum in the sealed tire/wheel area. That, of course, doesn't happen.

Nitrogen helps in some cases, I'm sure... but for the most part, it's just a gimmick. My stepfather used to own a Chrysler dealership, and he wasn't shy about telling people that it's really not worth paying for. Of course, my tires always got it for free. I never noticed a difference, really.

you can only get a 92% concentration also. i think its snake oil, when its real cold the nitro tires drop like 10psi

There's real science behind it, but the application falls short of expectations.
It's like saying a small bite of dark chocolate a day will cure depression. It DOES have some antidepressant qualities, but the effects are hardly earth shattering.

true, like racing where tires see extreme temperatures the nitrogen wont react like regular air.
At least with those portable nitro filling stations youre getting 99% dry product though. I think that makes the most difference, air having any or no moisture in it the latter being seeked.

air you breathe is like 78% nitrogen anyway. later.

Wow that puts it into perspective, I've been under the impression it never fluctuates, rides smoother and is 100% nitrogen but it sound about as useful as light up valve caps.
I'm just kidding its just not for me.

I read an article before that I can't find now.
It's not worth it for a 4 wheeled car.
If you have 18 wheels, the cost savings are significant enough to justify it.

GeoffM this is a little off topic but do you really get those mileage numbers in your Accord that are in your signature? I'm about to put an F22 in my Prelude and hoping for some better MPG cause gas is killing me lol

O and my shop puts nitrogen in all tires we sell and I started using it with my new set of tires. I'll keep an eye on how the wear but I was really only interested in the fact they claim they aren't affected by temperature change as much as normal air is.

I'm not Geoffm, but I see usually 29-31 mpg in my accord on mostly work commute tanks, combined city/highway driving. I have seen as high as 36+ on vacations where an entire tank is used at highway speeds only.
