    93 EX Coupe ?'s

    Hi all,

I have just recently purchased a 1993 Honda Accord EX coupe. Got it pretty cheap w/only 93281 on the odometer. I'm new to the import scene (have always had domestic mid-size cars and trucks) and I bought this mainly to save on gas (anything's better than 15mpg). I've tried getting in touch with the previous owner, but to no avail, so I have no idea what kind of maintenance has been done.

    My questions are:

    1) What major mechanical issues should I be looking for? I've done all the pre-maint. (oil change, tranny fluid change, plugs, wires, etc) but am not sure where to go next.

    2) I feel a vibration at rest in the wheel while in gear (automatic). It lessens while in motion or in park and neutral....what is it?

    3) Not looking to tune the car out or anything, but what cheap/easy mods will increase the mpg?

    Thanks for your help.

Check your engine mounts for the vibration....Easuest way is to baby the gas pedal....Lose weight in the car and yea an intake and exhaust might help a lil but thats bout it. Cleaning the EGR passages and such will help also.

      Thanks Nail05,

I have since heard that I need to change the timing belt and timing balancer belt because of the mileage. Is this true and how hard is it to do? (most of the searches come up with costs for a mechanic to do the work, which tells me its probably not easy).

The timing belt replacement is very highly reccommended for alot of imports (not just Hondas).

Even though your car has only 93,281 miles the timing belts are usually changed at the 150k mark. But since you just picked it up theres no way of knowing what the real history was behind the vehicle so I reccommend the T-Belt replacement myself.

They're somtimes called an Inteference Engine because if the timing belt ever happened to snap ,the whole motor goes out this would include: Bent valves, and other damaged internals. I'd say for a first timer it is a hard task to accomplish by yourself even if you have a repair manual.Engine bays on these model years are severly cramped especially around the A/C , Power Steer and Crankpulley area.So I'd would reccomend a either talking to your local mechanic or tap one of the members here in your area to help you out.

For a shop to fix replace the timing belt it would run approximately 200-300 dollars, but if you plan on replacing the timing belt and balancer shaft, you should go ahead and replace the water pump as well, this is highly recommended since the person(s) replacing the requested parts can just go ahead and replace the old water pump unit and save the extra hassle of doing so later down the road.

As for gas mileage, regular tune up and cleaning of the EGR valve may help improve it.

My gfs Civic was getting horrible gas mileage up until we replaced the old radiator with an aluminum one we bought on ebay, its 30% bigger than stock and improves engine cooling (somewhat of a huge oversight everyone misses) and reduces less stress on the motor itself and a new exhaust manifold (aftermarket also off ebay) and new o2 sensors helped improve overall gas mileage on both the city and highway.

          Congrats on your new purchase.
Love that big ass sunroof on the EX's.

          1. Good. You've already done the pre-maint. But check these link out.

          2. More than likely its going to be your Front motor mount (Torque mount, Dogbone).
Check the rubber insulator to see if its cracked, or damaged.

          3. One of the best mods is keeping your car in good running condition.
Staying up to date on all maintanaces and such.
But I guess the first mod people do to their car and my first mod, is Air Intake.
Go on eBay and search for Short ram intakes.
Then go to like an Autozone and buy a K&N Filter.
It may increase your MPG by like 1 or 2.
But hey, atleast its easier to change the filter later on....

You might also wanna check tire pressure and try driving without the a/c that much. Open windows while speeding on the highway and stomping on the gas also affect mileage. These changes in driving habits and the ones mentioned above should get you in good shape.

              ...adjust accordingly

Yes changing a timing belt would also be a good idea. I forgot to add that in my comment but looks like everyone else has covered it.

Yes, would be the same idea.
But i hated replacing the filter on my stock air box.

I think its easier loosening the clamp that holds the filter and sliding it off.

You guys are awesome...Thanks for the advice. I finally got in touch with the previous owner and he had the t-belt changed at 60,000 for a cross-country trek. Based on what I've read and heard here thats gives me some cushion time on that project....now I get to take on the motor mounts!
Thanks again, and to the admin.....Great site!
