ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

    Cold Air Intake

I have a 91 coupe and I am getting a new cold air intake system. I just dont know which one to get: a short ram or regular cold air intake? If anyone can tell me what the difference is and which one is better, that would be great. Thanks

Short Ram is a direct bolt on... No modification besides the removal of the stock housing. A full cold air system you would have to do some cutting and moving of different things. Short ram will give you increased throttle response. I would reccomend the Short ram but thats just my opinion. Usually are much cheaper too. Later

I recommend getting the two-piece eBay CAIs. You can use it as a short ram or a cold air intake and it shouldn't run you over $60 shipped.

To install the CAI, you'll have to enlarge a hole in the car body and maybe shave off some of your battery tray. It's very easy but make sure you have access to a Dremel, Sawzall, or hacksaw to cut the hole. I ended up having to drill a series of holes and cut between them with tinsnips -- not an ideal method.

From running both, I prefer having it set up as a CAI versus a short ram.

Yeah, I had to do the drilling holes method as well, but it was well worth it on my CAI. If it rains a lot in your area, go ahead and get a SRI, that way you don't have to worry about flooding your engine with water if you get into a puddle.

SR = good for low end power, cheaper, easier to install

CAI = good for high end power, not as cheap, harder to install

Not from what I've heard. Since piping is just...piping, no matter who makes it. Get any ebay pipe, then just swap the filter with a good brand name filter.

if you're just going short ram, basically any tube would do even the 20 dollar ones. From all the other topics that i've read about SRIs and CAIs, everyone always seem to swap out the cheap cone filters for K&N brand.

that is the right idea. i like to run the cai during the summer and short ram during the rainy season. i prefer the cai but since i live in WA theres too much rain to keep a cai on year round, that is unless a bypass valve is purchased. then you can run a cai year round.

If you're just going to do a short ram, I think the best method is to do the DIY version that uses your stock airbox hose. Check the DIY section for details.

You're absolutely right about the filters.
