ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

Question: F22A1 Vtech

    Question: F22A1 Vtech

What would it take to add vtec to a F22a1? If the heads were changed out to f22b's, vtec wiring & controller installed, what else would be needed to make an f22a1 vtec? What are the pro's / cons, and how much hp/tq could be gained from this? And no I do not wanna hear about it would be better/cheaper to swap in an h22. This is a technical question.

Any input on the subject would be appreciated.

i don't think the gains would be real noticable. for all the trouble of swapping heads and whatnot i would suggest doing a h23 or f22b dohc head swap. you will see gains and not have to convert to obd2 or any of that business. i think if you are to convert to obd2 at least a f23ax or a h22a4. good luck bro.
hey. my cb7 has morphed. haha.

So it isn't that big of a deal to convert a sohc f22a1 to a f22a1 with f22b or h23a1 heads and make the f22a1 a dohc engine?

          1. You spelled vtec wrong.
          2. Its not worth it for not even that much a bump in horsepower.

The F22A head is much better than the F22B1 head. SOHC VTEC is a gimmick at best.

As for DOHC, for the price you'd pay to do it right, and still have a potentially unreliable motor, it'd be both cheaper and easier to just buy a DOHC motor. The F22B DOHC is fairly inexpensive.

Headswaps are fun projects. They aren't great for daily drivers.

Hey thanks, I fixed the typo. I was really *tired* when I started the thread.

What about fuel economy? Would it offer any benefit in this department?

No benefit in fuel economy... if anything, worse.

                  So...

then what would be a good head swap for a f22a1 that would increase hp/tq, and increase fuel economy. And what would their realistic gains be on a stock motor?

The H22 headswap would be the most productive... but still, the F22A1 bottom end can only rev so high. You'd miss out on half of the powerband created by the H22 head.

Honestly, a headswap isn't a good idea. Others will tell you differently, but I've seen more fail than succeed.

If you want to boost your power your better off with the normal DOHC h23/F22B dohc head swap. The stock F22A1 can make good power with some add ons from delta/a6 mani/chipped 06 and sicne bisi is one of the leading F series supporters. SO the F22A1 is not a bad platform.

Your best bet is to stay with a full motor... The F22A1 can make some decent power NA, and it does really well with boost. That, or swap in an F22B DOHC or H22 (or another upgrade... just stay the heck away from the F22B and F23 SOHC motors!

So it would be better to leave my stock heads, and change the pistons to something like Bisimoto spec F22A shelf pistons?

The F22 bottom end can rev just as high as the H...

                              Especially on a stock head.

You only need to get to about 7500 to get passed the power peak of an H22 head.
