ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

Beginner Forum Rules - EVERYBODY read! (old and new members alike!)

Beginners start here. Once you have 30 worthwhile posts (off topic doesn't count) you may post outside of the Beginner forums. Any "whoring" (posting simply to raise your post count) will return your count to 0, or result in a ban.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

The rules can and will be added to. Any updates will be marked in the title.

The rules for the overall forum can be found here:

    A/C Help!

    Heres the deal,

My A/C doesn't work anymore, and it hasn't been working for a few years. My dad is saying "It's broke, and if you want new A/C then you need to buy a whole new unit costing a few hundred"

My friend is saying "You just need to recharge that sht"

I'm asking how I can recharge it, and WHAT I charge it with, because I've heard that the original shiznat isn't made anymore

Help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hmm so you have the Old R12 coolant?

    1) convert to R134 and you can charge it when ever you need to
    2) go to a shop have them charge it with expensive R12
    wat?

You have to buy a retrofit kit, not sure of the price because I've never looked into it my self (my CB was converted by the previous owners) but its cheaper in the long run.
        wat?

My ac stoped working in my old 90 coupe, the guy next door came over who does HVAC work with some 134a. I was gonna comvert it, but i thought it was fucked already, so we just mixd it. I was takin HVAc classes an NOVA at the time so i talked to some folks about it, all said it would be ok. We recharged the R22 system with 134a and it worked great till the car was wrecked 2 yrs later. We had a Fluke meter that read 43 degrees out the center vents. All we used was about $35 worth of tool from Advance, pep boys, or something like that.

Retro kit runs about $40-$45 at your local auto parts store. Shouldn't take more than an hour to put on new valve stems and recharge.

make sure your compressor works first of all, mine doesnt so I need to find another one.

turn the ac on and see if you notice a difference, if you dont, then your compressor doesnt work,

                    Thank for all the info.

So all I really need to to is go to autozone and get a retro kit and crank the r134 juice in my A/C?

Actually he should have the system checked for leaks, because freon doesn't just disapear, and checking for leaks isn't something you can do at home either, you need a freon sniffer. Also the 134a won't cool as efficiently as r12 would in your a/c system, you'd only be running at about 70% effiency since the system was designed for r12. Also the biggest issue with the conversion is that eventually the r134a will eat away at certain parts of the system.

For $100 he could have the leak found, plugged, and the system recharged with r12.

Or you can spend $45 everytime the system loses it pressure.

Yo, So you would think it's cheaper and more efficient for me just to get my A/c checked for leaks and pump dat r12?

Thanks everyone for all of your help!

It would be the logical thing to do. Just call around, and get quotes. Also get whoever does the work to warranty it. If everything else is working properly in your a/c system, then all you need to do is plug the hole(s), and recharge the system. If something else if found to be bad, junkyard for the parts. Good luck to you!
