ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

    Electrical Problem

so I'll be the first to admit it, I know absolutely nothing about the electrical system of a car. nothing.

with that said, this question isn't about my car, I'm just helping my friend out.. and could also use the knowledge myself as well. So he owns a 91 Prelude Si. Car won't start.. jump the car.. done. His car is running but as soon as I disconnect the positive cable off of my car, his car dies right out. Whats up?

I thought that the battery was primarily used as a key part to start your car? It shouldn't matter much after the car is already started. Is the battery just dead and needs to charge or is it the alternator, what's the problem?

I guess I should also tell you that we could only make the car turn over and start twice, after that no matter how long we kept my car running to charge his battery, it would not start. His battery is currently in my garage charging up.

Take out his battery and take it to a parts store to get it tested. It might not be holding charge. If his terminals look old and corroded those can be the problem sometimes thats the cheapest fix. If all else fails its probably the alternator.

Could it be a main relay fuse?

I'm not sure, but as far as the terminals go, they look brand spanking new. After I charge this battery if it's not set I'll take it to the parts store. He has to go anyways since he just got into a car accident and messed up his whole drivers side front end. He needs a new headlight assembly (the kind that flips up) and headlight.

I banged out his fender and pushed his hood down for a cheap fix but it needs some more TLC.

so, like ex said, could it be a main relay fuse?

It sounds like the alternator to me. Back in the day, that was the primary check among back alley mechanics; jump the car, disconnect the battery and if it died, it was the alternator.

If it was the main relay, I doubt it would start at all.

This is an altenator problem for sure...assuming you checked the battery cables for tightness and corrosion...but you still need to have your battery tested, you may be able to save it by charging it. Before you replace your altenator, you need to check all the connections, unplug the one plastic plug and check for corrosion...if all looks good, take it off and bring it to auto zone, advance auto or where ever you go, and have them both tested at the same time. Good luck

Main relay has nothing to do with it if you can jump it and it starts. The battery is the easiest to remove to get tested. I would do that first. If its discharging that fast I would say batteries arent holding charge. Usually alternator lasts a while before it craps out. How old is the battery? Anyway get it tested its free. The alternator is a free test also but you have to take it out which is a little more work which is why I recommend doing the battery first.

Starting and then turning off when the cable is disconnected sounds like the Alternator (AC Generator) to me.. Alternator is responsible for charging the Battery, if the alternator fails your car will not start and stay running for very long..

Main Relay failure would cause a lack of fuel into the combustion chamber, if it is starting it is clearly getting enough fuel.

haha, so in other words, if this charge doesn't do the trick, he's looking at spending around $120.

It has a $55 core charge which is nice though. Maybe I won't tell him about that and when I put the new one in for him just keep the core charge cash.

haha no, I'm brutal when it comes to friends now. I replaced a clutch for another friend not to long ago on his 92 Celica and all he payed me for was the clutch and his flywheel regrind. That pissed me off ! And I'm sure you know, money can both make and break friendships faster than anything else. SO I just swallowed my tongue and didn't say much.

Replacing a clutch is not an easy task, if you're not an ass hole, at the very least ! you should throw a couple bucks his way. I did the kid a huge favor. The garage quoted him just under a grand. I think it costed him just under $200 for me. Ass hole.

i had a problem similar to this one...
                        it was the altinator.
a bad alt can kill a batt and a bad batt can kill a alt.
so first before trying again get bat charged and tested.
iif good then put it back. then start car. turn on lights and if they go dim real quick and dont come back up then car dies its deff the alt.
replacing the alt took me like an hr.
but if the bat is bad, before you get the alt, get a new bat. then start it and take it to get the charging sys tested, just incase your alt is bad from the bat being bad... bat should be ok tho
