hey fellas I'm new to the board and got a quick question for ya. I have two D-1 fiberglass fenders I scoured and primed today, prob wont get them on the car till this weekend but I was wondering if I should put a layer of clear coat on it. I'm going to have the car painted next winter......... will the primer hold up untill then or should I clear coat it.

personally i would not clear it until you paint it, b/c you will have to sand off the clear and reprime, basically start over-- if you prime and leave it as is, you will still need to resand and fix any blemises and imperfections before you paint, but it's less than having to start over completely -- whether or not you add a base coat to the equation, clear coating is the end all of the paint process. then later when you change your mind, to do it right, you have to start over -- its a waste of money, imo, clear coat is EXPENSIVE!!! -- so either leave the parts off and do it all at once or just fill and prime for now --Originally posted by Tribalracerhey fellas I'm new to the board and got a quick question for ya. there's a good DIY on prepping and priming if you need it:

some primer is stronger than others, but all paints are porous - this includes your primers and base coats -- coming up on a year of having our 98 accord primed - and you can see the tiny pin-prick sized pits where the bondo is along with other tiny imperfections -- all of which we will fix when we paint this summer, but even after driving it across the country over all kinds of bs it has held up very well
where are you located, btw? that could help me give you better specifics on what to expect from your primer - and what do you plan to prime with? i could certainly give you better details

I live in Milfprd PA its right on the border of NY and NJ. I think Im just gonna rattle can with dupli color primer and then clear rattle it for now. Im going to have to resand and fill and everything again later anyway. Im going to mold the front bumper into the fender and side skirts along with the rear bumper. Shave all molding and around the outside of the door handle not the actual handle, I already filled the sides where the bumper guards were. Shes gonna smoootthhh baby smooth. I want to get all the peices on the car for now but I wont be able to store the car indoors and finalize the work till prob fall. Garage is starting to be built end of august. I know it will be more work later but I just want them on so I can visualize what my next step is/what I want to add. I will have a dig cam by the end of July so I will post pics. So far I have totally redone the interior, new carpet, fat mat under it, custom paint on all interior dash, doors, rear side panels, rear speaker panel, black leather rear bench. The interior is all black with white tribal accents. I have at least 30 hours into the interior and am ready to move to the bodywork. I still need racing seats and harnesses though if anyone is selling

sheeeit -- i used to go driving up 209 ALL the time ... small-ass town you got there
just south i remember a stretch of hiway with these abandoned houses -- one of which disappeared (thats an entirely diff story, though) lots of photoshoots up that way ... summers at lake waulenpaupack, too
but i digress,
...
if you're just doing spray can for now then prime and clear, but just know you're gonna have to redo plus re-fix any body fill and smoothing you may have done, b/c dupli isn't a permanent fix the same way a gun-paint would be -- the way the roads get out there in the winter, that's when you're gonna see the most pitting if you see any
like i said its not gonna be horrible , but its gonna happen
good luck with all of it
