    subs in the rear deck?

this is probably a stupid question, but has ne one ever took their subs and cut out the 6'9 hole's to fit like 10's or 12's in there. the reason i ask it because my system weigh's like 70lbs+. and well i gutted my car last week and now i dont want the box, so i was gunna fab in my speakers in the rear deck. is it a bad idea? comments are very welcome good or bad.

It's not impossible, butut not a good idea. the subs need the enclosure with proper air space to sound good. i haben't been into car audio in a while, but they used to make free air subs that would work in a scenario like you described. not sure if they still make em, but your best bet fir weight savings would probably be a fiberglass enclisure

You can do it if you want to. theres a lot of work involved in it. As for the free air subs, you can find them on ebay. But you have to keep the rear seat in place.

I thought about it, and it doesnt sound too bad.
You could make small sealed boxes to hang up in the trunk, where your subs would be mounted in the rear deck.

not a good idea to free air them.... u have to set filters very carefully. and if ur gutting a car for weight reason .... give up the system....

You could pull the rear shelf out, the material that covers the metal. While that's out, cut the holes for the woofers. Replace the rear shelf with like 1/2 inch mdf. Then possibly make some small enclosures for the woofers. So you won't need a big enclosure or take up a lot of space, get the shallow mount woofers. Kicker makes some, and I'm sure some other manufacturers do as well, Kicker was the first that comes to mind

Yes, it's called infinite baffle, but you'll need more cone area than that to actually have a positive effect and your power handling goes out the window. They'll probably bottom out with less than 300 watts of power. If you're getting rid of the back seat you can forget about that idea. You're better off putting strong midbasses in the door. I personally wouldn't waste my time hanging mdf boxes from the rear deck.

i think it may be a good idea to make a 4" bin to seal against the underside of the rear deck in the trunk and mount the subs facing down.

it would require some cutting of the rear deck and good sealing and mounting for the box itself but i could come out awesome if you reinforced the deck with some sheet metal. They'll just pound practically right into the chassis.

So if im thinking correctly, more bass feel with less actual boom since you'll have them mounted right to the car.

Could be a real good idea if it was done right.

Edit: and My moms Jetta has a Monsoon system with subs mounted in the rear deck. Sounds awesome.

here's an idea, get a foam baffle for a 10" sub and get some fiberglass resin. resin the inside and out and mount a shallow pioneer 10" and get a good 300w rms amp to run to it. i guarantee it'll beat and you can even get creative and make a grill to make it look somewhat oem like. personally i'd use a good 8" with a frequency response in the 30hz-300hz range. also use machined screws with washers to fasten it to the rear deck.

yea thats what i was thinking. i'd have to make sure they seal really good and have enough air space. thanks for all tha input, keep it comming
