    double din head unit.

im wondering if a double din head unit from say a legend or tl would be much of a problem to get into my cb7 wiring looks the same. just dont know how it might fit in the dash.

im sure im gonna get flamers but i have my reasons for wanting to do this.

i am pretty sure the legend unit is made by alpine
you can get them with a eq
alpine mp3 cd changer will work with a m-bus to ai-net cable
stock appearance might ward off theves
they are pretty cheap on ebay.

This is actually a good idea and I think it might work well too. I'm not 100% sure on the connectors of the CB7 and the acura's. however the legands should be the same, I'm just not sure about the TL since it's a newer model with newer wiring.

mouting could be tricky. probaby have to disassemble the dash and find a could place to drill into. then go from there and measure out a couple peices of metal and fab em up into brakets (bend em) ive done this to get a double din into a tahoe. i used 4 pieces of backstrap and bent them into L brackets, so maybe you can start from there? goodluck

My car came with a eq already in it from the factory. Its a 91ex and the radio was pretty nice, but when i went to upgrade it everyone told me its a din and a half so the double dins wouldnt work. I just got the alpine and this summer im custom making a piece to go over the little slot thingy they use with the install kit.

            everything alpine makes isn't gold.

seem like decent reasons, save for the acura name stamped on most acura headunits.

Yea but does it have RCA outs? If you wanna run a system you'll need a 3 or 5 channel crossover with line level inputs, and that will def. offset the cost. You can get an MP3 CD player for $90-120 shipped on Ikesound.com.

i always thought about getting a double din headunit, because its sometimes hard to see the lcd on the headunit.

If you do try to add a unit from one of these cars, try to get one that isnt Bose. Not sure how easy that will be though. Most of the ones I've worked on are Bose or some sort of amplified system. Plug is the same on some of the older models but the outputs are low level to feed into the amp, so driving your speakers directly probably won't work very well. I'd go aftermarket and maybe fashion a cover out of the face of the factory unit that fits over the aftermarket, so when it's parked people will, at a glance, think it's just a factory head unit.

as for seeing the display, I have an Alpine 9830 with a motorized face. I leave it in the first tilted up position. Makes seeing the display during the day when it's real bright a lot easier. The radio location in these cars isn't really ideal.

maybe thats what i'll have to do is buy a headunit that is motorized, because on sunny days, i can hardly see the display on my headunit and it kind of sucks

Double DIN and DIN 1/2 do fit but I found it to be a pain.

If you do 1.5 DIN you will need to find a .5 DIN spacer to put in there or fab a bezel of some sort. The map pocket is about the single DIN size.

Two problems I found with 1.5 or double DIN install. First off, there are plastic fins/vanes/support pieces inside of the radio space in the dash that need to be cut out. In a single DIN, the radio will pass right by these.

Second, that dash material itself isn't strong enough for any kind of mounting screws. If you do the kind of install with the metal 'pocket' the radio slides into, you will not be able to shoot any screws to the left or the right because of the foamy material the dash is made of.

Ok, a third thing too. There is a nice, hefty metal bracket in the back for supporting the back of the radio. In a single DIN install, the radio itself can rest on the map pocket (OEM actually bolts the two together), but with a 1.5 or double DIN there is nothing to support the radio. You will have to fashion your own mount for the back. Not hard, just tedious.

This guy got it perfectly, Most legends have bose amps. Tl's from 1999+ also have an external amp. 1996-1998 TLs headunits suck to begin with. My TL's headunit could never play burned cds and sometimes real ones didn't even work.

well i picked up a vigor headunit at the junkyard for $25, fits perfectly in the dash, just gonna need to rig up a bracket to hold it in place.

next i need to get a alpine mp3 changer and the adapter.

im not too concerned about sound quality, i might figure out how to add an external amp later on or something if its really shitty.

next project, figure out how to swap on a steering wheel with audio controls on it
