    H23 performance

I'm looking at going into a H23 swap. Before the swap though I'm going to build it up a little bit. I was wondering how many people have built up a n/a H23.

This is exactlly what i have been wonderin as well. I can get an h23 for about $400. Im not into spending $1500 for the h22.

The A6 just isnt cutting it anymore.

I've been looking and the stuff for the H23 is a little cheaper than the stuff for the H22. Plus Theres no extra wiring to do since theres no VTEC. I just want to know how many of the ones who have bulit them n/a make over 200 respectiable.

I havent seen anyone build an h23 full N/A, although it would be interesting to see one. Most of the guys on the prelude forums, mostly boost their h23's or have built h22's.

My bro has cams in his h23, and walked my lude. he had about 152whp and i had 169whp at the time. I didn't stand a chance. They have good potential.

The H23 has a much broader torque curve than the H22. The H22 ultimately outpulls stock for stock, but not by very much and not until the top end. You have to rape it to get to run. It is fun most of the time, but the H23 is a good DD engine. It seems to have a better stock tune on it too, which is one of the things that really holds a stock H22 back.

On the other hand, if you look around forums like craigslist etc, you are likely to find either engine for a much better price than $1500. I paid $500 for mine with full accessories and a new clutch attached, and it was pristine. So they CAN be found for less.

Most prelude guys don't build the H23 for NA power. Cisco's red build made about the same power as the h23 preludes I've seen dyno'd. There is one guy I know with an h23 that he's got a blacktrax stage 1 manifold, stock TB, ebay header, delta cams (262 I think) and an N1 exhaust barely made more than a stock 98 prelude on the same dyno...167whp on a dynapak. Made a significant amount more torque though.
200whp from an h23 will require significant work I think. Heck, PirateMcFred needed 11.7:1+ compression, Crower Stage 3 cams, extra displacement (+2mm stroke), and a fair bit of tuning to get 200whp, but he also got 183wtq.
H23's have all the possibilites an f22a has, and maybe a little more.

Wow a 186lb-ft of torque, thats impressive. I was thinking I would at least need about 11-12:1 compression and a bisi or crower stage 3 cam. Did he have to do anything to the bottom end as far as new rods, sleeves, etc?

                    I hope you don't plan DD'ing it with a stage 3.
                    wat?

Not going to try to make it a DD, but it will see occasional street time.

you'll easily be spending those $1500 you're avoiding to spend on the h22 on the h23 to make it BE on the 200whp mark...

hands down you'll be investing in pistons/rods, cams, and a GOOD tune. not to mentions the extras involved in a build...

200hp is just a goal, I'll prob end up with something around 180ish. This is the list I have so far.
                            H23 (duh):750
                            H23 Crower stage 3 race:430
                            Bisi H23 cam gears:260
                            Arias 12:1 comp pistons:595
                            Crower rods:750

So yeah it's won't be the cheapest build but it will be a one of a kind build. Plus that doesn'tcover all the little stuff like the tb bore out, injectors, tune, water pump, timing belt, etc. I'm trying to do as much research as possible. Going to start this in the spring since i'll be working at a machine shop and i'll have access to a flow bench and other good stuff i don't have at home.

He actually used an f23 block, crank, and rods. He bored bored the block 1mm and used h22 pistons. He had to machine the head a little to make it all work, but flow wise, the head and intake manifold are stock.
Actually, Pirate drives that car on the street alot, even with stage 3 stuff. He says it idles fine at 950rpm

                              Here are his dynos:
Green is build with stock h23 cams
Blue is Build with h23 head/crower 3 cams
Red is build with f22b head/crwoer 3 cams

H22 with bolt ons vs G23 build:
                              Red is H22A
                              Blue is Build

I'm actually in the middle of a build similar to what he's done. I'm changing a few parts though... Bisi Stage 2 cams (this is what Bisi recommended), k24z3 pistons, blacktrax manifold, mildly ported head (mostly on the exhaust), 68mm TB. My goal is 200whp and 190wtq... the tuner thinks this is easily possible if I get a better exhaust system. To think, the entire block is stock honda parts and I get 11:1 compression and 2306cc's and it all fits together correctly... almost like honda intended it.

If you intend to put Arias forged pistons in the h23 block you'll have to do your homework. As far as I know, the h23 has FRM walls, and FRM walls don't like forged pistons.
