    F22B DOHC found... worth buying?

I was at the salvage today and found a Prelude SI with a F22B in it with a broken timing belt. Worth buying? I've never seen one before.
I Can get it for $275.00 for the long block. The specs I have found on-line for this motor are:

    Displacement 2156 cc
    bhp@rpm 160 @ 6,000 rpm
    ft/lbs@rpm 148 @ 5,000 rpm
    Compression Ratio 9.2:1
    Bore 85 mm
    Stroke 95 mm

    Thanks Be Well.

A broken timing belt could mean bent valves,Cracked pistions etc.So if i was you i would check it out before buying or even considering buying it.

See if they will let you take the head off.

Yeah I already knew the valves might be trashed but it was different so I thought it might be worth saving I read it is a JDM motor my friend told me JDM motors do not have the number ending like USDM motors have, such as the 1 or 4 in the A1 or A4.
The head can be bought separate from the block I didn't get the price though, I'll call Monday and find out.
A very strange valve train assembly ......NO rocker arm shafts.
Would this head be good to build and are there performance cams available?

We never got the F22B DOHC in the US, so yes, that is indeed a JDM motor.
The head is most similar to the USDM H23A1, and the block is nearly identical to the F22Ax. Performance parts for those motors can be used on the F22B.

If the timing belt broke, the damage might make the motor not worth saving. As said above, if you can take the head off (and you know what you're looking at), then it'd be worth assessing. Still, the F22A has just as much potential, and I assume you've already got one of them... If you're going to build, doing so with an engine that hasn't already sustained damage might be the best choice.

if he made the effort to get this motor then decided to salvage the car do you really think its worth saving? obviously the guy probably had a decent knowledge of cars so why would he salvage the motor if it was useable.

I was just going down the "what if road" I'm still new to the Honda's as a performance platform and when I saw the DOHC motor I thought I had found a H22, until I looked at the
I.D. number and saw the F22B. I then took off the valve cover and saw the different style rocker arm set up and thought maybe I found something weird or special. Next time I go I'll remove the head and inspect the valves, rocker arms and cams the head might be worth while if It's not jacked up.
Yeah Deev I've got one... a 92 EX with an F22A6, I'm a fan of the F22xx platform. I wanted to do a H22 swap at first but after reading and searching on-site here I've found out that the F22xx is a good solid engine to make horsepower with.

As to whether or not the car owner had skills and knowledge who knows. Some people buy everything they don,t turn a wrench at all. For all of us who go salvaging we go because we work on our cars and are on something of a treasure hunt to find some cool stuff and pay a fraction of retail price and we enjoy it.

When you go to a salvage you do see cars that DO NOT belong there but.... there they are. The car is not wrecked this prelude is a VERY picked over shell, stripped of all usable parts. The interior is stripped bare and the exterior is stripped as well the only parts left on the car are the engine, transmission, front windshield, and a few odds and ends on the inner fenders and firewall that's all.
I've been salvaging for 40 years when I see a car this stripped....it had to Be a damn nice car and the owner gave up because it broke and they said "screw it I'll buy another one" and some lucky people stripped the car and made out well.
I have seen this repeated over and over throughout the years in a lot of places but, for me and others who salvage THIS IS how we get parts for our cars and to sell!

Even if you do decide to stick with your F22A, you can still buy the B and turn a profit if damage is minimal... it's JDM and the market for that is ridiculous.

If you're new to Hondas and our valvetrain looks alien, may I ask what kind of cars you're used to? OHV?

a f22b usually goes for 150. complete, that runs. so with that said. I personally love my f22b head. Not a drastic power change but there is something there.

Here's what I would do TBTH.

Snag the intake manifold + TB, and maybe the header if you have an F22A1.

Also snag the cams and sell em. People need cores for regrinds.

I wouldn't bother with the rest of it, even if you need a new motor. You can get an F22A damn near for free and rebuild it for a little more than $275.

I would do what glory said. Then you can use that money to build your f22a. To me, the F22B isn't anything special. It makes the same power as the USDM H23.

If the car is a 5 spd Si, it most likely has the M2S4 transmission. That is worth good money and a great performance boost for our cars. 4.266 final drive, good bump over the 4.062 CB7 FD.

And I'm not sure either make much more power than an F22A6 w/the H23 IM. I had an F22B DOHC and it really was nothing special.

F22Bs are rarely sold with the transmission. I honestly don't know anyone off the top of my head that got the motor and transmission together. Most people use their stock transmission, or they use an H22/H23 transmission.
If it IS that transmission, though... it might be worth grabbing.

The F22B is a nice motor, but it's true... it's nothing spectacular.
