Please DO NOT Post In The General Section

From this point on until otherwise briefed, posting in the general section of Performance Tech is prohibited. The only thing to remain here will be the stickies. We would just delete this section, but that would cause unintended results.

The majority of the threads created can appropriately be placed in one of the Performance Tech sub-forums or Technical; and the posting of them here is detrimental to the activity of said forums. If you have any questions about where you need to place your thread PM me or one of the other mods.

For the most part you all have caught on without this post, but there have been a few habitual offenders that forced me to say this.

Everyone will get a couple of warnings from here on out, after that I just start deleting threads.

Again if you have any questions, PM me or one of the other mods.

Rust Protection for SS Exhausts

    Rust Protection for SS Exhausts

I got a custom full SS MIG exhaust welded up and I'd like to protect the weld's against rust. I live in Canada so rust is imminent for the welds.

What can I do to protect the welds, long term if possible?
    Looks I don't care about.

I have put WD40 but that gets washed off after rain, so something more permanent would be better.

    BBQ paint?

paint the whole exhaust because the stainless will rust too, in time.

Good SS should not rust at all. The cheap lower grades can rust due to the impurities like iron. So if you can take a magnet to it and not feel the magnatism, it really shouldn't rust.

sure stainless rusts, it just takes longer.

but it's not worth arguing about.

that isn't true. SS is ''magnetically soft'' and can be given magnetic properties though cold rolling-working ect.

but i agree, good SS shouldn't rust...unless it is contaminated or stained by other metals. later.

That is true, thank you for the correction; though the magnetic effect is only temporary (that's what the "soft" means). So unless it was "fresh off the line", or exposed to a significant magnetic field recently it shouldn't be magnetically attracted from my understanding, if it is its caused by iron content in most cases. I'm referring to standard magnets, like a pen magnet, not supermagnets, or electro magnets. I've seen scientific videos of electromagnets being used to levitate a living rat.

i think you guys are missing the point... he wants to protect his WELDS! and what i would do is give the welds a little coat of rhino liner

What would help would be clarification to what wire was used for the welds. If the proper wire was used, the op shouldn't have any rust problems from my understanding.

A ceramic coating might help, although its most likely not as cost effective as other options, but could add few extra hp in the process.

really?... a few hp? i doubt it would even be that much... but i suppose it depends also on the mods he has but a stock f22 little if any at all... i know it's supposed to increase flow some how but i don't see how, i understand the heat dissipation

A ceramic coating keeps the exhaust heat in, which keeps the exhaust gasses hot and moving fast out of the exhaust system, which helps with the scavenging effect, where the exhaust gasses traveling/exiting the exhaust are helping pull the next combustion event(s) through the exhaust. It would be like wrapping the entire exhaust system in heat/header wrap. Keyword there is "could".
