thoes of you who have done this, how did you do it, and what are the results like? Is the wheel really that much harder to turn than with ps?

Please DO NOT Post In The General Section
From this point on until otherwise briefed, posting in the general section of Performance Tech is prohibited. The only thing to remain here will be the stickies. We would just delete this section, but that would cause unintended results.
The majority of the threads created can appropriately be placed in one of the Performance Tech sub-forums or Technical; and the posting of them here is detrimental to the activity of said forums. If you have any questions about where you need to place your thread PM me or one of the other mods.
For the most part you all have caught on without this post, but there have been a few habitual offenders that forced me to say this.
Everyone will get a couple of warnings from here on out, after that I just start deleting threads.
Again if you have any questions, PM me or one of the other mods.

while you're rolling it prolly no biggy...if you wanna know what it'll be like...just turn your key on and try turning the wheel with the engine off...do this in a parking lot...dirt is easy to turn in. Drive the car in a big open parking lot...kill the car...you can turn the key all the way back you'll still be able to turn the wheel...DON'T PULL THE KEY OUT...any way go about 20-30 then 50...kill engine and try to make quick turns around stuff...now...makebelieve stuff now...you will lose your ability to turn so make sure the stuff you steer around is imaginary.
but the ps system is designed around using the pump...you will stress parts more than normal. The pump pushes piston that turn the wheels...your input does very little...without the pump you have to work harder and the pistons that push the wheels no longer push the wheels (dumbyfied version now of course) and without it...the other components now work harder.
It is argued that you won't brake anything...but steering is not one of those things I gamble with...I've seen guys drifting 240's pop tie rods...sure not part of the p/s system but the point remains...your steering goes...you WILL wreck...
what is more of an issue prolly however...is trying to maneuver...if you try to take corners you will notice BIG time...steering is slowed when you remove the p/s
Fact is...the car and steering are designed for P/S...take it off and you will lose maneuverability.
Also...you don't gain anything by doing this...you gain more by deleting a/c components...you don't need a/c...you do need p/s.
Yes you can live without it...but it is VERY important.Last edited by bcjammerx; 12-18-2007, 07:58 PM.____

when the car is not moving it is hard to turn but once ur moving its not really hard some people believe that u r under more control with no ps u pay more attention to ur speed around turns and start to understand what ur car is doing in certain situations w/ps u have a better chance of oversteer or taking a turn to fast due to the fact that u cant understand the force being put on ur car during the turn because of the ease of turning w/ps IMO idk just my thinking

It's not that much harder, especially if you have close to stock spec sidewalls. The smaller the profile gets, the hard it gets to turn without p/s.
Something I recommend it to loop the rack. Pour some fluid into it and just loop it. It won't dry up and it won't be as hard to turn.
if you want to know how it's gona feel like, take off the p/s belt. It's going to be just like that.

pull of the belt and see how it feels, if you dont like it, put the belt back on. but i tell you its a bitch to drive, and i have steelies. like once you take off and go its nice stiff but easy. as soon as you stop its a bitch to turn.miss my turbo cb7

mines making noise, and I think it has alot of drag, my car has acted really crazy at low rpms about 3 times when It is cold while the pump is making noise. It has cut off 3 times and when I start it back up it acts like it wants to cut off and feels like it is running on 3 cylinders, it runs so rough. As usual, no cel does it both on chiped ecu and stock p39. I think im going to try to rebuild it instead of replacing it. I might make some kind of diy.spin city

Ive removed the belt and Im going to drive around for a few days to see if it happens anymore and to decide If im going to delete my ps. The pump feels like it turns freely so I dont think that it was about to lock up, causing my problems. Im going to get the fuel system checked soon to see if it is what is giving me all these weird problems. The ignition is new in this car and all tune up items have been done recently.spin city

it going to be hard if you just take the belt off. there still fluid in the system. after you remove the whole system and clear out the fluid it gets alot eazyer. you just
plug the hard line ports
loop the VSS line(make sure there still fluid in there)
fill the rack with grease.
i like mines, and it's really not hard at all from a stand still.

is it easy enough for you to drive with one hand on the steering wheel when ps is removed? with the belt removed it takes more effort to turn the wheel than I want to have to deal with. with my ps belt off, the annoying low pitch chirp I had at idle and the high pitched chirp I had when the car was cold disappeared. The pump spins freely and dose not seem to have any noticeable free play in the pulley. So I'm thinking maybe it is just the belt making the noise? and I need to look elsewhere to find the problem described in a previous post. My first car, a Suzuki Swift, didn't have ps and I didn't miss it one bit, that car had some tiny skinny tires on it though.Last edited by dbsharp; 12-19-2007, 10:36 PM.spin city
