    Custom X brace

let me start off by saying i made this on my 95 accord, but its the same as the cb7 i'm sure if i wanted to try and bolt it in to one of those.

so i ended up having some steel piping laying around my house, so i figured i'd expieriment and make an X brace, which came out pretty well i think... its solid, its does not move, and i did't have to drill any extra holes so no integrity was lost back there...

ended up mounting it on the lower parts through the mount of the ebay strut bar, and on the upper part using a hole already up there and mounting a longer bolt through it.

    thoughts/comments welcome.

i'll give a review once i drive it

I have something quite similar in my CB7. Mine is made from square section tube and is basically a trapezium ('rectangle' with narrower bottom than top) with an X welded from corner to corner.

The brace corners have 1/8" thick tabs welded on, that are drilled in order to be attached to the chassis by means of the bolts that secure the existing (pathetic) semi-diagonal braces at each side of the aperture behind the rear seat.

My brace tri-angulates the whole aperture, extending from the top to the bottom, not just the upper section as does your brace. As a result I can't carry any long cargo extending into passenger compartment (unless it's skinny enough to fit between the tubing of the brace), but this is a small price to pay for what the X brace does for handling.

Note that an unbraced (or nearly unbraced) aperture behind the rear seat is a very common feature on more modern sedans, but exists only to allow long loads to be carried. It significantly weakens the torsional stiffness of the chassis and is I would think a product of the marketing department, not the chassis engineers. Years ago most unibody chassis had a stressed skin behind the rear seat back (because the engineers knew it was needed for chassis stiffness...) and thus wouldn't really have benefitted (much) from a brace at this point.

I also have a home made rear tower brace which made a noticable difference to handling response. I then made and added the 'X' brace which further improved handling response. I then fabricated a connector to attach the X brace to the tower brace, which made zero noticable difference...

PS With yours, I suspect the ebay tower brace mounts are not likely to be rigid enough even for the tower brace tube, let alone that and the X brace tubes. From what I've seen of ebay style tower braces, the brackets that attach the tube itself to the chassis are typically very under engineered (read; not nearly stiff enough...).

LOL you guys are hilarious!! Hahaha sorry for the misleading pic guys

Larry, I do have a brace that bolts on to the bumper support, as you can see in the first pic. Didn't feel any difference though..That used to be a C-pillar bar, but it didn't make a difference then, and it was a hazard for my passengers because they kept hitting their head on it lol so to the trunk it went..I was going to add another bar or two that will go across the spare tire well, but I changed my mind because I didn't think it would do anything than add more weight to the car..

Maury! Yeah the Moroso box is huge lol I bought it 'coz it's "NHRA" approved, and it's light since it's made out of super hard plastic...Not to mention it was cheap..But it's prolly cheap 'coz it's fat and bright blue and no one wants to buy it

So ron did you make yours? Or did you buy it off a site? I know ESP makes one but the x-brace on yours doesnt seem like it stretchs out as far as theres does.

I am in the fabbing process of this. Since my cars torn down I am using it for the measurements. I am hoping to be able to fab these up and offer them to members of cb7tuner for WAY less than ESP does. I am also going to do some Front strut bars (2,3 and 4 pt.). I will get pics and all of them when done
"you can catch me swoopin 4G coupin switchin lanes" haha haha.
