    Possibly bad rack??

    Preliminary info:

Control arm bushings are perfect, ball joints (upper & lower) have no movement, tie rod ends are TIGHT, axle is a reman RAXLES.com axle (GREAT quality), caliper and rotor are verified bolted tight.

Issue: When approaching a stop with brakes moderately/lightly pressed, I'm hearing a clunking from the driver's front. It sounds like something is knocking back and forth between two walls. I had my wife shake the steering wheel while the car was on ramps with me under it and the only noise I hear seems to be coming from inside the rack??? Does anyone else's rack make a slight knock/clunk when shaking the steering wheel?

My boots on both ends are cracked and the end seals are leaking a little but I've added no more than half a pint over the last year to keep it topped off so it's a very slow leak.

My thought is that the sleeve/guide at the end of the rack is worn allowing the shaft to move back and forth a bit.....but not bad enough to cause a huge leak????

I found THIS GUY in my state who seems to sell very affordable, quality rebuilt units and I'll probably buy from him instead of the hit-or-miss racks from the various parts stores.

this may sound really dumb but did you check your brake lines? my friend put coilover on his eg and forgot the bolt the brake lines back on and they were smacking the strut and inner wheel.

The brake line is bolted to the strut, it's not that. Thx

Check your hubs while the tire is lifted off the ground grab the tire at 12 and 6 o'clock and shake it see if you have any type of play.

Nope, all of the ball joints are tight, upper and lower.

Should have stated the wheel bearings check out fine too, no movement.

I've never heard of the rack making this kind of noise but EVERYTHING else on the car is tight and in great condition.. ?
