    HSD coilovers?

So I always wanted to get some function and forms. And now that I have my mind set on them I went to my parts guy to get them ordered. He tried to tell me I should think about getting some HSD coilovers, and I told him I'd think it over. Personally I think he's just trying to upsell his new product to me, but I went home, and have been reading some reviews for an hour or so. so far I've concluded (don't quote me on these findings):

    Pro's:
    - 14 way dampening adjustment
    - Caster adjustment
    - 20 year old + company
    - Used by drifters, etc in AU initially, new market to the US/Can
    - website says 30-day money back guarentee, 12 monty warranty

    Con's:
    - I have in forums about the coilovers failing after 6 months for some people, and they have a really hard time with warranty
    - New company?
    - Designability (small pieces, doesn't look tough/rigid)
    - Made in Korea (maybe)

I say designability as structurally speaking, they look a little ... "thin" or "weak". My Pro's and Con's may be off as these are just forums I'm reading reviews on. They're website has limited information also.

    Anyone running these?
Anyone have any input on these?

    thanks

Haven't heard of these, but a 1 year warranty sounds pretty promising. They are certainly expensive enough. 800+ USD. You could also get k sports, d2's, or Megans for around that price range. There are plenty of reviews on all those.

HSD only makes coilovers for the CL1/7. Euro 6th gen. They won't fit a CB. The cheap ones are $800+ coilovers, so they do look like they're decent... although the website doesn't say where they're manufactured. They also say they provide OEM shocks for two major automakers, but they don't say which... so it's probably Cherry and Geely.

If they did make CB components at one point, they don't now... so any warranty is likely long expired.

        yep, i hear ya's . think i'll stick with FnF's type 1s.
I'd rather go with something with a history of function... and form :P

I'm still baffled by F&F. For that price, they SHOULD be crap... but I have yet to hear of any serious complaint. In fact, I don't think I've heard of a single set breaking for any CB7tuner member. The only complaint I can think of offhand is Jarrett saying that they're too stiff.

Too stiff should not be a complaint (insert sex joke here)
I've never heard of a complaint for FnFs either, n'or have I ever read about a complaint. The fact that I can find three serious complaints about HSDs (in regards to physically breaking after 6 months) is not a good sign.

The other fact that not a single member in here runs them is concerning. They are new to North America from what I've read, but this can be a bad thing as well.

the question is 3 out of how many that have got them have complained about them breaking.

when i 1st looked up Raceland Coilovers, i looked all over for the reviews. Scion, BMW, and VW forums. out of the dozens(possibly close to 100), i saw only TWO bad reviews. same with Stagg struts. it makes a HUGE difference if there is 1-3 bad reviews out of the 100+ good reviews especially when it comes to suspension. right now everyone wants to be slammed. some new suspension companies aren't making their products to be slammed. especially not on the last thread on the coil. then when someone buys that product and slams their car, they get mad because the strut blew 3 weeks later. user error.

when it comes to suspension reviews, you HAVE to look at how the suspension was used. if you're looking to replace your old worn stock 200k mile struts with KYB GR-2s. look at the reviews on them. if you see someone say "mine blew 4 days after i installed them!! crappy product!!" well look at their suspension set up. were they slammed? what kind of set up were they running? same with Tokicos. "OMG!!! HORRIBLE RIDE!!!" well what kind of springs did they have? how low were they riding?

these are the MAIN things(in my opinion so don't jump down my back) about what to look for(or at least what i MYSELF look for) when searching on reviews for suspension:

              for springs/struts/coilover sleeves
-how low was the person riding?
-what kind of spring or coilover were they using?
-how many people ACTUALLY used them as opposed to how many people are just nut-riders and are just saying it because everyone else is saying it?

              for full coilovers:
              -how low were they?
-what kind of ride were they expecting?
-what were the spring rates the owner was looking for?
              -who actually has owned them?

one main thing to look for is the people who ACTUALLY have owned them compared to the people who are just saying the product is crap without ever owning the part. a LOT of people up on these online car forums will be quick to say "oh. its junk" but have A.) never heard of it, B.) never OWNED the product, or c.) never even knew anyone that had the product. Function/Form was unknown at one point. along with D2, Megan Racing, Tien, and other popular companies out there. but they didn't just sudden pop up and were popular. they sold their product, stood by it when it went wrong and improved it. THAT'S how they get known. people knocking them before they try it wont get this industry anywhere.

Nobody here is using the HSD coilovers because HSD doesn't make coilovers for the CB/CD chassis. If they did, they don't now. If they're just entering the North American market, then their CB/CD offerings were only sold elsewhere... and North America is by far the hub of the CB/CD tuning focus.

Terence, I agree completely on complaints of poor ride quality and broken components being largely due to user error. Be it misuse of a product (slamming something not made to be slammed), or improper installation (over/under-torquing bolts, etc...)

Some companies really do make junk, though. I've read bad things about D2 not only on this site (a few reviews from people I know personally, who I know don't halfass or abuse their things.) But I've also read reviews from users on many other sites. Same with BWR.
The thing is, SOME of their parts are going to be fantastic. Others are going to be junk. They're copying a simple design, and manufacturing them cheaply. Because of the cheap manufacturing process (both labor and materials), the quality is going to vary from batch to batch. Maybe even from part to part. Higher quality products will have a great deal more consistency. When Some guy in Oregon says his quality coilover system that he bought 2 years ago is good, you can be pretty sure that you're going to get exactly the same thing when you order yours now. With cheaply made stuff, you might not have the same level of quality from one corner of your car to the next!

Take Megan Racing's header as an example. Many people have had great luck with them. Many have had issues with cracking, leaking, and exhaust fitment. Some of that may be user/installer error, but much of it is likely due to the lack of consistency in the manufacturing of the parts.

You guys should check out the video. I do like the idea of being able to adjust the unit into the shock collar, which lowers the vehicle but does not change the spring rate. There's also a lot of other adjustable features.

Most the reviews I read were those by buyers themselves.

My parts guy is seeing if they have them for a CB7. He noted that all of their available stock is not listed on their website. From what I'm reading online the company is fairly new and everyone is playing "guinea pig" with these with 99% positive reviews.

I'm almost debating getting these.... (assuming they make them for cb7s)

this i completely agree on buddy. some stuff is going to be crap. lol. i've heard numerous complaints about the MR header cracking after a while. but the same has come from DC Sport. only one i HAVENT seen a crack on is the BisiMoto header. but not everyone has $600+ to spend on JUST a header. props for making an awesome product for the F series/CB chassis.

i haven't seen any reviews on D2s because i haven't really looked for any. lol. im sure ill find some bad reviews on them if they do break. and its not just CB owners i've heard or seen complain about them. Civic, Tegi, and even some TSX owners(i think) i've seen say D2s were crap.

                      thanks.

Are there any other coilovers where the shock can sleeve in/through the boot/bottom section/collar?

I'm not terribly up on coilover design, as I honestly have no interest in them myself (I think I would be hard pressed to find the limits of a Koni/Race setup...)

Agreed. But look at the youtube screenshot above. Does anyone know if any other setups allow the shock to go throught he bottom collar thus allowing the spring to stay the same but allows lowering. Seems pretty cool.

Actually majority of the full coilover set ups do that. Tien, Type One and Two, D2, Megan Racing EZ Streets, and BC Racing.
