Wow all that for Vtec take ur time if ur f22 still runs let her run, then start ur sourcing things out slowly but surely cuz if u need tools (cuz u dont own a set) chances are ur in for more then what ever ur gonna assume, trust me i just finished my swap only after 1.5yrs or aquiring my motor thats cuz I let it sit for a while, but u have to take certain things into consideration since ur doing it urself.

Things that will need to be done or atleast i think is necessary especially since u have the motor out: INSPECT for wear as well
T belt/W pump all Timing seals manual tensioner conv (unless u want auto)
Head-gasket (its not as hard as u think just more bolts to remember)
Block/Cylinder head cleaning(as well as valve faces/piston tops get all the carbon u can out)
Inner T-cover cleaning as well as the cover itself upper/lower
Im cleaning EGR port also(if all gaskets are good reuse otherwise replace)
Tranny bell-housing cleaning (lube all pivot points high temp grease that includes clutch slave master and forks/throwout bearing)
Pressure wash external block after removing all electrical components and use wire brush etc... to clean up (engine bay to if u want i wud why drop a clean H into a dirty bay)
Tapping the tranny to a F22 bracket
Engine flush is necessary (lord knows how long the oils been sitting)

Oh snap sorry to right a novel that all i can think of right now i know there is more it'll come to me or someone else can chime in...

Oh and BTW incase anyone is wonder WTF 1.5yrs to get it done there was no rush suspended license and harsh winters are my excuses FTW lulz

Yeah I plan on taking my time I actually broke the list up. With my bonus I'm getting the motor and everything over $20. While I'm waiting for the rest I'll be replacing the little things on the motor like gaskets, o-rings, seals and cleaning it up. I prolly won't get in until summer 2011. I figure I do wanna take my time cuz being my first time and my lady talking bout I don't know what I'm doing, you know as men we have to prove them wrong. So yeah taking my time with this one.

        Do you have these?
        - '00 Civic Si distributor cap (if you want internal coil)
        - H22 distributor rotor
        - H22 spark plug wires (NGK if possible)
        - H22 radiator hoses (Accord's might fit, but always smart to change these)
        - H22 valve cover gasket kit w/spark plug seals

You can get a manual tensioner conversion kit (all genuine Honda parts) from Import Replacement Parts for $89. Much cheaper than buying individual parts.

If you've got a Harbor Freight tools shop nearby, keep an eye out for car magazines with coupons! I'm holding one for $90 off a 1 ton foldable shop crane for when I go to buy one in December - drops the price to $100! Unless you can buy used for cheaper, of course. Also getting an engine stand; I don't like the idea of that heavy engine dangling on a chain while I do the resto work.

Some of that I don't need; I can make do without an impact gun, for instance. And I ditched power steering a long time ago. So instead I'm buying stupid crap like an intake, BB6 gauge cluster (for the higher redline), SiR badge, and DOHC VTEC quarter panel stickers! Otherwise I'm in the same boat as you. I've got a box filling up with tune-up parts from Majestic, and I'll have money for the engine (HMotorsOnline.com - solid rep there) later in winter.

Careful with the header wrap, I hear it deteriorates the welds.

        Total spent so far: $676.65
Still must-buys for me are ESP engine mounts (probably ~$300 with paint), injector seals, front main oil seal, cam plug seal, front balance shaft seal, and fluids. Also wanting a BB6 gauge cluster ($100 locally), ECU (might just run the JDM P13 temporarily, I hear it works fine with an auto), TCU (again, not needed, but recommended), and new torque converter ($100, iirc).

cyborg you bring up some good points. I wish I would have had the impact tool when I was doing suspension I may not have been spaying ph blaster for 8hrs.
Soon as learn how to clean the inside of the motor I'll do that before I put it in. But seals, gaskets, and stuff like that are def getting done. I gotta "Type R" badge I'm waiting to put on but where can I go for the vtec one. I'm thinking I wanna get another exhaust manifold and down pipe. I don't know if the aftermarket I got for the cb will fit the h-motor. Hmotorsonline is good from what I here. I went with another company more in my price range though I think it japanimportmotorcorp or something. Free shipping and liftgate to residential addresses. 1725 or 1800 with the down pipe. They have jdm harness on the motor which I'm use some plugs from for vtec harnes. As far as the coil. I plan to keep it internal and mod my harness by splicing the black and yellow words together with an in line 30amp fuse and some insulation.

Swings I'm a swap virgin, I think imma do everything little by little to make sure I get this right. I been told this is a lot easier than I'm thinking.

I haven't needed an impact gun on any of my car work yet. The hub nut was a b**** to get off when I put in new axles, but sticking a pipe over the handle of a socket wrench, then jumping on it a bit, did the job! I got my DOHC VTEC decals from Majestic, under 2000 Civic Si. These things:

Personally, I'm not going to waste my money on an aftermarket header until I go after my all-motor build. From what I hear, the headers from the Accord EX and the H22 flow just as well as any of the budget brand-name parts (DC Sports, Greddy, Megan, etc.). It's because the collector, that last section where the pipes finally merge into one, is only 2" so it can fit the factory exhaust system. So I'll keep the JDM header on (requires drilling new holes in the flange to mate with the cat, I believe) until I can afford the Bisimoto piece.

This swap will easily be the most in-depth mod I've done to a car. I never turned a wrench (at least not on a car) until I started taking automotive classes three years ago. I completely disassembled, measured, and reassembled an automatic tranny and a pushrod V8 at school, but we never tested if they worked afterward. Since then, outside of an instructor's supervision I've swapped a transmission on my car and helped change a clutch on a friend's (no engine lift for either event), but that's as 'risky' as it got. But I can't say I'm worried about it, after replacing as many parts as I have on the F, and steadily doing a mild wire tuck over the last couple months, I'm comfortable working with sensitive parts and wires and all that. I've read and re-read the swap stickies a few times over, and it doesn't seem like much of a job at all. I've mentioned the swap at work a couple times, and it's funny how non-car people think it's such an incredible undertaking.

Why do people in the US always fall for "cheap" Canadian engine resellers?
If they sell you garbage, you have NO recourse. You're stuck with a broken motor and no money.

Order from a reputable American importer, like hmotorsonlin.com... or you're very likely to regret it.

I never really did anything outside of changing wipers and tires before this car. The ppl even some mechanics think this is too much for me. Well I was raised on reading rainbow and its true everything you want to know is written somewhere. Like we both said it doesn't seem like too much. I been fuming and tracing wires since the navy. Doing stuff on a whim was our job in the service. For example my amphibious warfare training was shooting live rounds over marine heads. If I messed up then ppl died. If mess up here ppl won't die but I may loose my job cuz I won't get to work. Either way it will be fun I'm sure. If I can do this then when I get 2001 prelude swapping the h23 in there will be easy.

Congrats! It's a great feeling of getting the motor in your possession. Did you get the LSD tranny? Did the EngineDepot give you any specs of the motor over the phone or on paper? Hope the swap goes smoothly.

Nah I didn't get the LSD. The only thing they gave me was the receipt. Yes it is a great feeling. I can't wait to do my break down this weekend. I'm stripping everything and inspecting it. I wanna replace most if not all of the seals and gaskets. So this weekend Imma really get in and see what I can do. All I know right know is that I have an H that needs to be in my car so i an have the edge over the averge high way idiot on the wy to work.

My F22 has 298k on her. She's got issues like a leak i can't find from somewhere over the bell housing. Look like it could be a dizzy o-ring, the dizzy has oil on the bottom of it. she also runs stroner in cold weather than in the summer.

Looking at the condition i got this one in I'm not surprised at all. The main reason i used them is cuz they aren't far and get out of the shipping & lift gate fees. I also want a project to work on slowly.

I just came across the vacuum hose diagrams and i got the pin locations from the forums also. Hopefully i'll have everything ready for the first week of June if not sooner. I'm trying to take like a week outta work put in like 8hrs a day on this when that time comes.

This post is old. You are prob better off replacing the auto tensioner with a KS manual tensioner and using all the regular h22 oem timing parts.
I've read several posts were the h23 conversion was tight to put on.
I just got done installing my KS manual tensioner and it was pretty easy. Not much room though
