    H22 oil pan gasket

I've got a 93' CB7 and am about to swap my F22a1 for the JDM H22a. I'm following the swap guide by converting the auto tensioner, replacing the oil pump housing (broke during conversion), timming/balance belt, and seals. I'm about to finish the oil pump install and am waiting an o-ring the pump didn't come wth.

While prepping the oil pan for reinstall, I found that getting the old gasket off is far from easy. The block side is perfect, but the pan side is fairly melted it seems. My main tool has been razor blades and an actual gasket remove tool, but it's taking awhile and is very tedious. I'm sure it will take forever regardless, but has anyone tried gasket remover or heating the gasket up with a torch? I'm thinking that if I can get it warm but not hot, it will make it a lot easier to get it off. Thoughts?

One other thing I need to know, is it bad to leave my engine internals exposed for a few days? The oil pan and oil pump have been off the engine for about three days now while I wait for parts and scrape the old gasket off the pan. The engine is on a stand inside my garage with the door shut, so it hasn't been directly exposed to moisture. The temp in the greater Seattle area (Everett specifically) has consistently been in the upper 60s with relatively low humidity.

    Thoughts?

you can use a torch to heat up the old gasket. it helps a lot. but, be careful while doing so.
i highly doubt you'll have an issue from moisture

        Use a wire wheel.

All shop should have this, at least at my VW shop. I've done it in engine building class too and it works flawless! Once you're done removing all the old stubborn rubber gasket off the pan, flip it upside down, set it somewhere it's nice and flat, rock the pan back and fourth, if there's movement then use a hammer and gently pound the lip of the pan side til it's nice and flat. Use a flashlight to see if there's any big clearance between the pavement and the pan lip. Rock it from side to side to see if it's even out. Once it's nice and flat, it shouldn't rock at all if you try to.

        Good Luck!

^^^agreedalso it's not really a gasket, its' honda bond. they don't make a oil pan gasket for the h, only a little bitty 1 for the crank notch. so get yourself a tube of honda bond so u'll have it when u put it back 2gether

i can also say that they do have a oil pan gasket for the h22. and do you know why? because it is exactly the same as the f22 gasket.

Couldnt be further from the truth. I actually have a brand new H22 oil pan gasket in hand. What you're probably thinking of is the oil pump housing. Honda doesn't make a gasket for that, you have to use Honda Bond or RTV.

Yup, Honda does have an H22 gasket. Just make sure you torque the nuts & bolts to spec, so you don't squish it out which will leak.

Actually there are 2 different oil pans. The stampd steel one takes a gasket, the aluminum one uses only hondabond.

                            so much confusion on gaskets

h22's have an aluminum engine & oil pan. so they only need a 3in round gasket around the round part. the rest is only RTV

f22's have an aluminum engine & steel oil pan. so because its different metals, they need a gasket so it doesnt leak when the expand differently with the heat.

so if you car has a steel oil pan, you need that annoying large gasket. if you got an engine with an aluminum oil pan you just need that tiny bit.

Correction: 92-96 H22's used a stamped steel oil pan, similar to the f22.

                              http://www.hondaautomotiveparts.com/...LOCK+-+OIL+PAN

This engine uses an actual oilpan gasket since the design of the pan allows the flange to flex.

The 97- and newer H22's use a cast aluminum pan that is rigid and thus only requires hondabond gasket sealant.
