Engine swap time, but which one??

Hello all, it has been a long time since I've been on the site. Blew my head gasket a while back and now that it's tax time I'm looking at swapping in a DOHC vtec but need some help on what I want. First, I know I want an LSD 5-speed tranny. I like the long 5th gear in the m2b4 but not the price lol. If I get lucky and can find one I'll jump on it, but if not I'm going to look for the t2t4. As for the engine, My first thought was an H22. Very common, tons of info, and comes in obd1 (if i can find it). Slightly cheaper is the F20b. I like that it is cheaper and that it doesn't have fmr sleeves (so I can built it if i decide I want more power). I think I read somewhere that it can rev to 9000 with stock bottom end. The bad would be the limited availability of parts. Third choice is the H23 blue top. Seems to be about the same price as the F20b but with compatible H parts. As far as I kno, the F20b and H23 only come in obd2 so with those options I'll increase the price in parts and increase labor for me. I guess what I'm looking for is out-of-the-box power, ease of swap (into my 91 accord), and of course cheaper is better. So what are your opinions??

i like the k series mod myself. if i ever build another cb it'll b a k swap. i luv my h no doubt but if i did a swap now i'd do the k. reason for me is it's a newer, more modern & i just like the set up. but it is a lil more costly & sense u want to save then i'd go w/ the h swap, easy & str8 4ward.

they are more than twice the price of the h and not obd1 so need conversion and the mounts are expensive

I'd go with the F20b source out a few parts and you'd be set. It's really your call.

I just got a F20b and most of the parts are h22 parts such as water pump and timming belt and spark plugs. And you can easily get a head gasket kit offline you would just have to wait for it to ship over to the states. And header and intake manifold is the same as a h22.

good to know. How do you think it compares to the h22 as far as power? Also, H series trannies bolt up to it right?

Pretty much the same, h22 has more torque though, and yes any h trans will bolt right up

I'm leaning more towards the F20b simply because it is cheaper. Only thing I won't like is converting to obd1. Which way is better, getting a obd1-obd2 harness converter and plug and play or converting injectors, distributor, and ecu to obd1? Also how is the t2t4 tranny if anyone is running it. I know the 5h gear is short but is it tolerable?

I would just use your stock harness, and get h22 injectors, and a chipped P28, or even a hondata s300, also the T2T4 has a longer 5th, its the T2W4 that has the short 5th, you'll be close to 3k at 80

The H22 is the easiest of all, and offers the best overall performance. I don't see what the problem is with "fmr" sleeves (as you call them).
The H22A existed in OBD1 form, so a proper OBD1 ECU is available. The H22A was available in the US, so ALL necessary replacement parts can be found at a dealer, or your neighborhood autoparts store.

To me, it's a no-brainer. Sure, the F20B's rev limit is intriguing, but how high do you really want to rev a 10+ year old engine? The H23A's extra torque is kinda cool, but how much more torque does that .1L really give you? Either engine will need to be run on a custom-tuned ECU, or run improperly on an OBD1 P13.

As for K swap suggestions... I love how such things come from people that haven't even done it in their own cars.

Fat fingers, I meant frm. I agree that H22 is the best option and easiest swap. As I said before, the only reason I am taking a look into the F20b is its overall price. $1900 buy the H22 with 5-speed or the F20b with 5-speed LSD. So I guess I gotta ask myself if the stock LSD is worth the extra work. I dont mind waiting for parts and I feel confident doing either swap.

The stock LSD is good, for sure. I'd still stick to the H22, though. The fact that the other two don't have a corresponding OBD1 ECU is a big factor. To me at least.
