    valve question

well i was adjusting my valves today, .010 intake and .012 exhaust, did everthing as supposed, arrow up, #1 cyl then #3 then #4 then #2,
i put everthing back together, and crank takatakataktaktkaktkakt, i sa ok regular outof the sudden it starts misfiring, i turned it off, and check again,
take off spark plugs and #1 is touching the electrode and a bit off porcelain is missing,

im wondering what can cause this, has never happened to me before, bitch is is past nine so autoparts are closed

Your spark plug broke? Sounds like you fucked a valve and must have hit the spark plug.

You probably left something loose or did something wrong.

Did you by any chance leave cylinder #1 at TDC the entire time? Also, you do know #1 is the cylinder closest to the timing belt, right?

By his description it sounds like he left #1 at TDC for all cylinders.
That would mean he would've had to to some serious adjustments to #2 and #4 cylinder valves though

When you adjust the valve clearance you must measure / set the gap at the 'base circle' of the cam (not at any part of the 'pointy' section of the lobe), and you'll need to rotate the motor several times so you can do this at each valve.

Looking at one valve, if you rotate the engine until the valve is fully open, then rotate the engine so the camshaft rotates 180° (which will be 360° of crank rotation, i.e. one full turn), then that cam lobe will be in the ideal position to measure the gap. But really, anywhere on the round 'base circle' is fine.

Please let us know what happened, we're dying of curiosity (at least I am). Don't worry if you did something a bit dumb, we won't laugh... promise!

Funny, I just adjusted my valves yesterday! I had quite better luck though, car runs much smoother and pulls better at low RPMs.

after #1 rotated it couter clockwise and did #3 then #4 then #2

well im still mising a spark plug so i cant start the car

                      if im not mistaken
                      it should be
                      arrow up= #1
                      arrow left= #3
                      arrow down= #4
                      arrow right= #2

probably what im thinking is i did the adjustment on exhaust instead of compresssion

How far did you rotate the camshaft each time? Should be 90 degrees.

Try a compression test to see if you screwed up a valve.

What fell in there? Did you get it out?

                              just replace the plug.
