    sputtering starts

since the weather has gotten much nicer, the f22 is starting to act up on start ups. i'd say about 85% of the time when i go to start it, it will sputter sputter sputter and then it will crank over and idle. any one have any ideas on what could be causing this?

    i've already done/cleaned the following:

    iacv
    fitv
    egr
    tb

there's probably more that i just can't think of, i'll let you know if i see it come up in the thread

yeah I'm kinda having this issue too. I just did a valve adj. and replaced all 4 rocker arm o ring seals and replaced the rotor inside the dizzy, that was fun. But I have no oil in the spark plugs, yet it still struggles to fire, like after i start it it kinda misfires and sounds like a WRX w/ a muffler and then 5 sec. later it's normal again?

It's the curse of the cb7 richness lol j/k
I get it when I first start my car, It runs rich as, but I assumed its cause it doesn't pick up the oxy sensor reading for a few seconds after startup.
Does it do it on hot or cold startup?

This is the kinda thing I gotta check in person but it sounds like you might just need a NEW IAC

Main Fuel Relay.....when was the last time you replaced or Resoldered it??

it could be going out....I had this problem on my girl's old Tan CB..and it turned out..the solder was STARTING to form cracks..and IN and OUT...catch and lose continuity...causing the sputtering ( lack of full...then spurts of fuel )

so you might ALSO look into getting that MFR resoldered.

                another thing...

check into getting a spare Ignition switch...

those go hand in hand...( IGN.switch = ignition...sending signal from bat---ECU---MFR---FUEL PUMP ).

so check that IGN. switch as well.

                keep us posted.

bump this thread, b/c i'm having this issue also, warm or cold, my engine sputters right after it fires for about 10 sec, and then its good for the rest of the time its on. But EVERY time I start it, it does this. I did the rocker arm O-ring seals and a valve adj. recently, along w/ a new rotor for the dizzy. Any reason why it's stumbling on start up?

that just cleans the filter from the carbon build up. there's a way to electrically test the components function, and i believe it's in the same DIY thread as cleaning the filter. i'm going to test mine and see what's up

tested the iacv electrical and it seems to be working fine since i heard the click noise when i activated it.

i adjusted the fitv again after i let the car warm up at idle. noticed a few things in the process.

i reset the ecu after adjusting

                            - the cooling fan did not come on, but when i turned on the A/C, both fans are working. would the best place to start be to test the fan relay? i did not have any symptoms of overheating prior to noticing this.

                            - also, at idle and warm, my motor is vibrating pretty excessively. the plug wires jerk, as well as a few vacuum lines from the intake manifold. i know it's supposed to vibrate a little due to age, but should it be enough to cause other things to shake that bad? i have an auto tranny, and never changed mounts out as of yet. i think the front dogbone is on it's way out, if not already gone because i see a big crack in the rubber when i peel back that little rubber dust cover.

try also checking your coolant temp. sensor underneath the dizzy. I know on mine, the dizzy o ring went bad and oil dripped on that plug/sensor constantly, so the oil could've shorted out the sensor if the dripping was bad enough.

And also, check the condition of your spark plugs. I for sure thought my sputtering problem was something fuel related, but sure enough, my plugs were in horrible shape, when I installed them two weeks ago, they looked perfectly fine. They had 10K miles on them (back up plugs) but weren't nearly as bad as they were now. That took care of most of my ROUGH starting issues, although I still have a very faint stumble that lasts for like 2-3 secs. and its gone. I'm gonna monitor my car for the next few days and see if its getting better/worse.
