Low compression engines such as f22's actually have a harder time ignitiing it because the higher the octane, the more resistant it is to igniting. Higher octane is made for higher compression engines such as h22s, gsrs etc. so that they dont ingnite to early and ping.

Octane Boosters?

I have an update on the pinging issue: I just did a timming belt on my car and I noticed before the tb change the timming marks were jumping all around when I used the timming light on my car. After the belt was changed the mark stayed steady and when I took the car out for a spin the pinging is gone. I guess with the worn tb the ignition timming was jumping around and causing the ping but now everything is fine.Originally posted by homegrown_xtHi Guys, I'm a noob to this forum.
This is what I have found out on my car about octane booster: Pings really bad on 87 octane. I added some Chevron techron to clean the inectors and carbon deposits that had built up, no improvement. I backed off the timming a couple of degrees, slight improvement but still pings. My friend gave me a can of Prolong octane booster and on the next tank of gas I filled up with mid grade fuel, 89 octane, with the octane boost. It still pinged for a little while untill all of the old 87 gas was burned up and then it stopped pinging.
I filled my car with straight 89 octane before but I was still getting a slight ping so I think the octane boost is doing something. Actually the combinaton of resetting the timming, fuel and octane boost is doing something. As long as I can get the pinging to stop I won't have to worry about blowing a head gasket.
I am getting ready for another tank of gas and I am just going to put the mid grade fuel and see what happens next. I may have to dump octane boost every couple of tankfuls.

My car runs better with 93 definately.
When I was a kid my mom accidentally put 93 in her 1993 Accord LX 5-speed and asked me if I did something to the car cause she said it was running really good and peppy.
I thought about it for a second and looked at her receipt, she filled it with premium by accident. (This was the beginning of the sneaky gas station tactic to switch the pumps around so you go for the far left pump thinking its 87 but its really premium)

slobluaccord said it righ the first time, they do nothing and boy using anything other than 87 your wasting coin, do your research people.

dont add any, if anything use a fuel cleaner that will get you goingWhat makes me laugh about forums, is that no matter how much you try to help someone, they dont take the advice. Go ahead and do it the hard way.
You got to respect what you drive, and appreciate what you have, making the best of what you got. and if that means putting CAI, HID's, a phat stereo system, and a idiot in the drivers seat...then so be it!

My car has about 60,000 mile on it and it was running fine. It just had the original honda tb from '92 and I figured I had better change it, good thing I did because it was loose.Originally posted by trendyexrHope you werent running your car hard at all, or for any length of time like that :PCan't complain, it was free!

I have an H22, the best gas we can get here is 91 and 110 at some pumps but its like $5 a gallon. Ive been using the premium 91. Will it do anything if I add the octane booster or is it a waste on a otherwise stock H22. I remember I used to use it on my Z-28 before we went to the track and it made a difference. Also premium is required for an H22 is that correct.

Pinging is basically what happens with an engine "knocks" from detonation, usually assosiated with higher compression motors or cars running to much boost, which essentially is the same thing. They call it pinging because of tiny "pings" or vibrations the internal motor is making from the detonation or preignition because of, to low octane or like on a turbo car having your intake temps to high. Most knock sensors actually detect vibrations in your engine and pull timing ect so you dont blow up your motor.
Cool air is better for higher compression or boosted motors, but to cold will make the air to dense and actually cause you to ping or detonate also, which most ecu's of stock turbo cars have a sensor that pulls timing and stock boost down below 32 degrees.
Also if you want to know the facts about octane booster, read the new Sport Compact Car, there is a very good article about this were they test outlaw, NOS, and the toluene mix(which shows the best results of a 30% mixture at around 14 bucks I think for a tank). They take the gas to a lab and test it out. They also show you the formula to convert import gas to US gas, and show its really not that much higher, or if you want a simple formula, take .95 times the jap gas and you will get a basic estimate around US gas. There 98 gas = our 93 gas.
